Preventing my period!

MrsMoBright, on April 13, 2015 at 3:19 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 22

So my ob/gyn gave me birth control pills to use as a method to prevent my period if it were start during the time of my wedding/honeymoon. It looks likes this may not be a problem and I may not even need to use them, but because my cycle does fluctuate between 24 and 28 days it gets kinda tricky and I might be cutting it close. I don't need the pills for any other reason than preventing it from coming at suuuuch a bad time and she did say it can help with some of symptoms of depression, anxiety and the like all of which trouble me during that time of the month. However, I know there are side effects of taking the pill, weight gain, blood clots. So I'm trying to to decide what to do, chance it , or take the pills to be sure. Anyone else here have these thoughts or concerns or insight from experience? Any help will be appreciated!

Birth Control don't have major side effects unless taken while smoking or at a certain age with a dose that is not recommended by your doctor. I have taken birth control pills for ten years and never had any issues. It really depends on your body. If your medical doctor prescribed you birth control pills to stop your period, they have to be taken at a certain time and a specific pill. Did she instruct you on all of this or just give you the pills?

I think that if your doctor said it would be useful to you then it might be worth it, even if its just for a few months

These seem like they would be concerns you should bring up with your doctor.

My only insight is that it doesn't always work right off the bat. You may spot your first month, or not have anything. If you're going to do it I'd have started as early as possible. The first month I was on it didn't stop mine from coming. It's like it took time to build up in my system. Everybody's body is different though. Good luck!

I have heard of people gaining weight on the pill, but it really just depends on the pill. I personally have never had a problem, but I have had friends who had to experiment (under the supervision of their doctor) with the different brands to find one that worked for them. That being said, if you are only taking it for the month to prevent the period I doubt that would be a long enough period of time to see any real issues.

Do you want to stop your period, but still get pregnant? If you don't want to get pregnant there are several options that will stop your period all together. There is a shot that last 3 months. I didn't have a period the whole time I was on it. Now I am using the implant in my arm. That will last for 3 years and I shouldn't have a period either. With the implant I can take it out anytime(by a doctor) and get pregnant right away.

The shot will cause you gain weight. The implant won't.

Well, if you haven't started using them and your wedding is 2 months away, it could actually change your cycle. You could spot for weeks at a time the first month or so. I'm not a doctor, just speaking from experience. You could try and bring your period on earlier with parsley tea a week or so before your wedding. I've done this. You simply steep about a handle of clean, FRESH parsley in hot water and drink that a few times a day. Within a day or so you should get your period if you're close to getting it anyway. Don't know if it works for everyone, but it's worked for me.

It seems you still have time to see how it will affect you if you start right away. If your DR gives you one with low estrogen then the other side effects like the weight gain and such might not be a big problem. But honestly, I've been on like 4 different ones over the years, and none have ever made me gain weight or have blood clots. I think it might be a small percentage.

Had the same talk with my doctor. He said I don't have to have a period at all. Just keep taking the pills straight through and have a period whenever I want one. I was floored! And this was the best news ever, because I was due to start somewhere in the middle of the honeymoon. So YAY!

I've used the pill to stop my period a bunch of times, and I've been on it for over 10 years and haven't had weight issues. It does give my boobs a little boost when I start it after being off (after having my daughter), which is nice! I'm surprised that it would stop your period on your first try using it, though; but I'm sure your doc knows what she's talking about. I would take them, just as a precaution...cause once you start spotting a little, it's basically too late and the pills won't do you any good.

I second that you really need to have this conversation with your doctor.

But keep in mind that it's not a "sure thing" -- skipping your period with pills doesn't work for everybody, or it might take several cycles to work. When it doesn't work, you get "spotting" all month long, which is unpredictable and annoying as hell.

Your wedding is in less than two months, so this doesn't seem like a solution you should count on.

I am due to get my period either on my wedding night or on my honeymoon. I called my doctor and she told me not to take the sugar pills, and just continue taking the next pack of birth control pills. I hope this works!

So I tried to do this with a vacation a couple years back. Turned out that one pill a day wasn't enough to stop my period for the week, I was supposed to double up the days I expected my period... But doc didn't tell me that until I complained after the vacation. So I would check on the details of the use for this purpose

@Nattie, wow, that's nuts! I'm on Seasonale, which is a three month cycle. Three months on, then a week off for my period. I've never had spotting or breakthrough at all, and have been on it for three years now. I couldn't believe how badly I'd timed the wedding when I realized that my once every three months period was going to fall during my HM. So that's when my doc said, just keep taking the pills and don't skip the week and I can basically time it so that I get my period whenever I want...or I don't even have to have one at ALL. Bonus!

@Amy Yea, so if you're already on birth control, that totally works and is pretty awesome. But, if you aren't already on birth control, it's gets tricky and if the pill is not strong enough or you don't double up (check with your doctor on the exact specifics of that pill) you may get a surprise.

I know I'm responding late, but I just wanted to say thanks for all the responses, very helpful! I decided to pass on taking the pills it looks I'll be ok even it fluctuates a few days. I can't imagine starting it and having to deal with spotting for a month or so that would be miserable, just not worth the risk. So I'm praying for the best!

I've been on birth control pills since for almost 10 years. i use them to control my period. it's super convenient to be able to control when i let myself have my period. i skip it around vacations, when DH is home from work (he's gone for three weeks and home for three weeks. it sucks to waste any part of his time home with me being on my period.) or when i know i'm gonna be in a swimsuit.

it's totally safe to do this. and the longer you're on the pill, it ends up shortening your period when you do have it. if you end up spotting between periods, your doctor have prescribe a higher dose pill brand. i had that issue with another brand and once i switched, i've had no problems at all. it's great.

if i hadn't have had my birth control and was able to skip... i would have been on my period for our wedding and our mini moon. would have RUINED everything. lol. so yeah.

I've done it before with my pills. If you are already on them its super easy. I am going to change it now so the spottiness only happens this month. if you haven't taken them before, you will be spotty after you start. I've been on it for 7 years now. If I have a vacation, I change it. Any reason I don't want it that month, I just don't take the placebos and start the next pack so i don't get it at all. I could take my pill so I never get it, but i like the monthly reminder that I'm not pregnant Smiley smile

I have been off BC for over a year and a half - and of course I'm scheduled to get mine ON my freakin wedding day. I'm not willing to go back on them, but FYI - if you have never been on BC before, it might affect you in worse ways. Sometimes the hormone levels aren't right for you and you have to find the right pill for you.

When I first when on the pill I bled for 24 days straight.

So, since you're so close to your wedding, I personally would not risk it just to not have your period.

I'm hoping mine holds off - but if I do get it on the day of, that means we may have a honeymoon baby in store if we're lucky!
