Printing Envelopes yourself...any advice

hibiscus0317, on September 27, 2017 at 6:12 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 17

Does anyone have any advice about printing envelopes addresses yourself?

I've been trying to do it through Adobe Indesign and my printer, but my printer keeps on messing up and putting the text either too high or too low. I've adjusted the page setup, page size, told the printer what size the envelope is, and did the manual feed. I'm getting super frustrated....

I see many people on etsy selling printed envelopes for $1 so I don't understand why this is so hard for me to figure out.

It took me two hours and some persuasion, but I finally tricked my printer into printing the right orientation from a word document. I had to print our return address on the back instead of the front. For whatever reason, I couldn't print both addresses on the front.

Use word and mail merge. You can probably even find a YouTube video to show you how.

I had issues with the address positioning on the envelope too. See if your printer has settings for paper type - I had to change that in order to get them to feed correctly. I spent hours and hours trying to get them right.

ETA: That is, if your envelopes are made of heavier paper than standard envelopes.

You guys are convincing me to pay to have the envelopes printed by Vistaprint. I have gone back and forth on it and tried convincing myself to save money and print them at home but sounds like it will be worth paying for them to come to me already printed.

For my save the dates, I printed the envelopes myself. I ended up cutting up printer paper to the size of the envelopes to test. I used Word with mail merge and edited the page and print size to the size of the envelope. You can preview what it will print like. Also, choose I highly suggest choosing a font that will print well no matter what size it is.

One thing I had to keep in mind, was that envelope printing doesn't actually have to be perfectly centered. You have to make room for stamp(s) and the return address if you are putting that on the front. Also, no one is really going to notice if it is a centimeter or two off from what you exactly wanted.

I am in the same boat - it's such a pain!! We decided to opt for clear labels and will use mail merge (Excel and Word) to print them that way. They won't look as nice but I don't want to be frustrated over envelopes.

We did matte clear 2x4 labels for the guest addresses and it was super easy. You really had to look to find the edge of the label.

It took me a while to get the alignment perfect but I did it. I had the same situation as TarHeel, and just printed the return address on the back. I did it all on word with two different fonts. I cut up sizes of paper the same size as the envelope and figured it out via trial and error without losing envelopes. It took some time but I am so happy with how they came out.

I did everything through Word. I set up the margins and I used an envelope as my tester. It took more attempts for the envelope flap, but that was mlre because of centering. Everything turned out great...and then my printer broke. Straight face.

I did mine with Microsoft Word, using mail merge, with an Excel document with all my addresses. I used blank paper, cut to size to get my spacing just right, so I didn't waste envelopes.

A word of advice... still buy extra envelopes. I had an alignment issue and had to reprint about 10 of mine. Then had to order more later for stupid errors of my own making.

I used the envelope wizard on Word and set the address about an inch lower than IRL and it turned out perfectly. Be sure to adjust the paper feed on your printer to hold the envelope firmly in place.

I recommend doing each individually, rather than off a spreadsheet.

We used word and mail merge. It didn't take long, but we did have to like jam the printer so the envelopes would stay in line and print straight.
