Printing on Vellum

nicole&mikeM, on April 4, 2014 at 10:31 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 8

I know quite a few of you are DIYers, and i was wondering what experience or tips you have for printing on vellum?

I am trying to decide if i should you the laser printer at work or my inkjet at home to make the luminaries for my table numbers. I have read the pros and cons online but real life experience would be great to hear!

You have to stand there and take each piece and lay it somewhere to dry because if they stack on top of eachother like a normal pile up they will bleed/smudge. And they take a long time to dry. Sometimes the bar inside your printer gets inky and you have to take it apart and wipe it down with a cloth, but you should be OK if its a modern printer

Also, i had to tell my printer it was a 5 by 7, not a 6.38 by 8, because my printer would only accept its own sizes that existed in its paper size options, so i had to fiddle with centering and margins before it came out right

The wiping the cartridge down is what worries me. I was hoping that some one had used a laser jet printer and i wont have to worry as much about the smudging.

You can go to any local sign/print shop and have this done.

I am pretty sure the cost will be cheaper then you purchasing ink and paper plus time spent cleaning your printer

I printed one sheet using the laser printer at work, and it turned out great-- no smudging and the print looked really sharp. I can't attest to the quality of an inkjet or to the quality of printing multiple pages using a laser, but my experience was really good.

I am in the process of doing this for my 22 wedding table signs with our photo information! I cut a size a little bigger than what is needed, and literally tape it flat onto a piece of regular printer paper & feed it in! I made a document in Microsoft word, so I printed it out once on a regular sheet of paper so I knew how big of a piece of vellum to cut and where to tape it onto the paper. Make sure to put your printer settings to "best" rather than normal or draft! You'll get a saturated color this way. And when they're done, I let it sit for a few minutes then I slightly wave it back and forth to speed up the drying process! Hope it helps!
