Proof of Baptism

Cassandra, on July 22, 2018 at 1:08 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 17
I grew up Baptist, while my FH grew up Catholic. We decided to get married in the Catholic Church. The priest we met with asked that I have the church I was baptized in send records of my baptism to him. I sent the pastor a message and he messaged me back a few days later saying that they don't keep records of baptisms. What do I do? I can't get married in the church without proof of my baptism. Any advice?

If that is a requirement and your church doesn't keep records, you could choose to get baptized again. This would provide a current record, and I know I've seen second baptisms for people who were recommitting their lives to Christ. Good luck!

Yes you may have to get baptized again. However I am pretty sure if you get baptized under the Catholic Church you can revive communion just don’t quote me.

It is true, if I convert to Catholicism I can receive communion. But I don't want to convert to Catholicism. I've attended mass for over a year, with FH, but I'm just not ready to convert. And even if I wanted to convert, I would have to take months of classes before I could be baptized.

No you can't. You have to receive receive the sacrament for holy communion to receive communion.

Yes, I could do that. But if my church keeps no records of baptisms, then there would be no point as I haven't strayed from my beliefs since.

I thought that was only for kids. I though get if you got baptized as a adult you don’t need to do communion.

You could request a certificate from the church from the church if you rededicate your life via Baptism & use that as proof. I grew up Baptist & it was something that was done.

I haven't attended that church in a year, because I moved to where my FH lives and I've been attending Mass with him weekly since I moved here. And I've been told that if you decide as a adult to be baptized through that church they request that you become a member as well (my dad got baptized two years ago there), but I don't want to do that either.

I'm not sure. I could ask the priest at church. But I'm not really sure what he'll say. FH didn't know what to do either. He was baptized and raised in the church we attend so he doesn't have this problem. I'm just worried that they won't let me get married there if I can't provide the necessary documentation.

If adults convert to Catholicism they do a process called RCIA where they receive are baptized and receive holy communion at the same time. But no you cant be only baptized in the Catholic church as an adult or kid and receive communion.

Do your parents have any photos of your baptism? I got married in an Anglican Church which wasn’t my home church and they wanted the date of my baptism - couldn’t find my baptism certificate and my home church was destroyed in an earthquake so goodness only knows where the records were, but my mum checked the photo albums and she had written the date under some of the photos of the day. If you explain the situation to the church and can provide some proof (ie photos) of your baptism, they may accept that.

You don't have to be baptized to get married in a Catholic Church if your FS is Catholic. All your FS has to do is ask for dispensation to marry a non-baptized person from the bishop of your diocese. The priest should know this process. You'll have a ceremony without mass (you can't take communion) and your marriage will be recognized by the Catholic church.

Yeah, we know that. But they need proof of my being a baptized Christian and I can't provide that if my church doesn't keep records of baptisms.

I understand that. I'm saying that it shouldn't be an issue that you can't prove you're baptized as Catholics can marry people who haven't been baptized at all (Christian and non-Christian) and still have their marriages recognized by the Church. Have you talked to the priest about your situation?

I’m getting married in a Catholic church dated from the 1700’s and I didn’t have to show record from me, only my FH has to give the proof of sacraments. He is the religious one. I didn’t have to show anything, Not even a baptism record so I’m confused why they are making you do that. I would call the archdiocese of your area and find out exactly what you need and follow up with the church. They probably have strict rules there for that specific priest.

Does the Baptist church have an equivilant to a diocese or some other kind of higher office that keeps records? I’m really surprised the church you were baptized at doesn't keep records. Talk to your priest and see if he has any suggestions. Hope it works out,

Is there anyone at the church where you were baptized that could write a certified letter stating that you were baptized there based on pictures but they don't keep records?
