Proper way to address family in invitation?

Cali, on May 9, 2017 at 8:42 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

What is the appropriate way to address an invitation as a family? Do you name each child or refer to them as "and family"? I've seen both:

Mr. and Mrs. John Jones

and Family

OR

Mr. and Mrs. John Jones

Jack, Jill, Judy

I would just do "The Jones Family". Unless any of the children are over 18, then they get their own invite.

I totally butchered mine and just went with what I knew.

Almost all of the couples did not have same last name because the wives did not take them so instead of spelling all names, I just put:

"Jane Doe, John McCain and Family"

I think I did "and family" but the only kids we invited were my 2 cousins so I only had to do this once, I might have written "and sons" which is more specific, I guess. On the inner envelope I wrote all the names individually.

So technically, the outer envelope has Mr. and Mrs. John Doe, while the inner envelope would say something like:

    Mr. and Mrs. John Doe

    Jack, Jane, and Julia

And anyone over 18 gets their own invitation, even if they live at home.

We did the second, especially since we didn't have inner envelopes.

    Thanks!

Yes, we aren't doing inner envelopes either, so that's why I felt like I needed to name each person.

    There are several ways.

    Mr. and Mrs. John Jones

    Sally and Harry Jones

Mr. and Mrs. John Jones and Family

    The Jones Family

I was stressing over this, then I realized it really doesn't matter. I just wrote "The Jones Family".

Both ways are correct. Personally, I prefer the idea of listing the names of each child in the household. It seemed more personal to me to name each household member on the invitation.

Since I had inner and outer envelopes, my outer envelopes were addressed to the adult(s) and my inner envelopes listed the adult(s) on one line and the children's? names on a second line below that. Had I only done outer envelopes, the kids would have been listed on a second line below the adult(s).

Any kids in that family who were 18+ (regardless of whether they lived on their own or still at home) received their own invitation.
