Pros and Cons on having custom dress

Ana, on June 23, 2016 at 12:33 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

I'm a plus size bride. I have pretty much dreamed of having my dress made for me. I have a style that I am inspired by (pic below-it's a maid of honor dress but I will tweek it to my liking Smiley smile ). I contacted the designer of the dress and she told me it's aprox. $350 to make it plus materials.

Some have asked if I dont't want to have that dress shopping experience but I am put off by it. What do u guys think??

It's a pretty dress but Why are you put off by dress shopping? What color will you be wearing?

I am plus sized...size 18/16 depending. I haaate shopping. I tried on 5 dresses but when I put my dress on it was all worth it! It was a great moment for me. And I am typically the woman crying in fitting rooms. But its all about what you feel comfortable in

Where I'm from, a lot of brides get their dresses custom made. I guess I always envisioned myself in something made just for me.

The dress will be white with a much fuller skirt but I am in love with the top of that dress and the flow of the dress.

I had several horrible dress shopping experiences. I also had a couple of good ones. That dress is beautiful. If it's what you want, then go for it.

    It is a beautiful dress!

I really recommend going and trying on dresses in person before committing to a dress...

Or does the seamstress have anything close to this already made?

I know many gals who thought they wanted a certain style and then tried it on and it wasn't as good as the pedestal they had built for it. I personally ended up in the one style I told my consultant to avoid at the beginning of the meeting!

Dress regret is REAL and annoying so do anything you can to avoid it xD

You need to try on different styles first to see what you really like. A lot of the ladies here, myself included, go in thinking we'll love one style and end up with a dress in a completely different style. I had my custom dress made after trying on many different dresses and pulling from each what I loved about them.

That's a beautiful dress! I'm getting my dress custom made. To be honest, I'm glad I don't have to go through the whole dress shopping experience. I could just see myself getting frustrated and end up crying because I couldn't find anything I liked. My dress will be really different and custom was kinda the only way to go for me. My aunt/god mother made my mom's dress so I kind of wanted a custom dress for that reason as well.

Have you ever seen say yes to the dress? I feel like I would be the one not be able to find anything.

Thanks ladies! I know a few styles I don't like already. For example I know I'm not a mermaid type of girl because I had bought one to be a guest at a wedding and ended up returning it to get an A line dress. I was so uncomfortable amd I only bought it because my family was the one that liked it (another reason the shopping experience is one I'm not looking forward to).

This dress is made by the designer I contacted and she will make a sketch for me and go over everything. I have talked to her on the phone and she went through the whole process with me. She wants to get started early because my wedding is during prom season in which she is busy (proms are a big deal where I'm from lol). I have tried on quite a bit of formal dresses (which I know don't compare to bridal gowns) and I feel like I know what route I want to take. I will consult the designer on her thoughts about what she thinks will be best. I'm really excited to start the process.

Im fat as well and I also hate shopping, because clothes my size are usually an afterthought by the designer, unless I go to torrid or lane bryant. My best friend is custom making my dress and I love the experience! I went with her to pick out fabric and then she would do alterations. Shopping while fat usually sucks, you dont have to make yourself miserable just because you think you're supposed to like it.

If you want a custom dress and its reasonable then go for it. Saying yes to dress isnt really that important plus depending on where you go maybe limited in dresses to try on anyway

I had my gown custom made for my upcoming wedding. I never tried on any gowns at bridal salons and I couldn't be happier with my decision. I thought that I was going to miss the experience of trying on a dress. My mother told me "either you can have the gown of your dreams or you can try on dresses." That sold me.

    Pros:

    -Unique dress

    -No/little alterations

    -Control over design decisions

    Cons:

-Not trying on other styles gives you less options to work with about the design

Personally, if I was getting a custom made dress, I'd still want to visit a shop or two. Nothing trumps seeing yourself if everything and going from there.

And not sure where you live OP, but Cherry Blossom Bridal in DC is fabulous, and they're a plus-sized boutique. I can't get over how great they are!
