PSA: Michaels is a ripoff!

Miss Tattoo, on September 23, 2011 at 5:26 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 33

I posted this on another wedding forum that I am no longer a part of, so I wanted to post it here. Those who are purchasing their own vases, do not purchase them from Michaels if you are looking to save money. If you don't want to save money and want that Michaels brand attatched to it, then ignore this thread!

We plan to do our own centerpieces. I purchased a square vase from Michaels and it was still $3 with a coupon. Then I came across Dollar Tree! They had the same square vases for $1. So which one do you think came from Dollar Tree and which one came from Michaels. You'd be surprised!

The one on the left is from Michaels and the one on the right is from Dollar Tree. The Dollar Tree vase is bigger, thicker, and feels more durable.

I don't know which is which but the one on the left looks to be a better quality and more modern design.

The dollar tree ones are thinner. It's not that Michaels is bad, really. Walmart is the same price or more expensive.

I would totally recommend Dollar Tree to anyone doing a wedding. But if it's something you want in your home for years to come, you should consider Michaels because the glass is thicker, therefore if it falls on the floor it might not break.

@Pumpkin-The glass is not thicker from Michaels. The vase felt very fragile to me compared to the one from DT.

Thanks for the info. When it comes to certain things, particularly for our wedding, I hit the Dollar Tree first and then hit the Chrismas Tree Shop. Chances are I could find what I was looking for at either place. They were not the best quality, however, in dim lighting who would really notice?

However, imho, when it comes to silk flowers, the difference is obvious, even in dim lighting. When it comes to silk flowers, imho, Michaels' stems are far superior to the flowers sold at Dollar Tree or Walmart.

I bought two vases from Dollar Tree and they are very thin. Not even sure if I can get them engraved.

@Carole-I agree with you on the silk flowers. The selection at DT is nice for like office decorations.

@Pumpkin-That's so weird. Maybe they changed their stock? I know the square ones I have from DT are very thick and heavier than the ones from Michaels.

Knowing now that the one on the left is from Michaels and looks like its a better quality I would prefer it over the Dollar Tree one, also the more expensive one just looks better than the cheaper one. Glass is not all made equal.

I wouldn't call that a ripoff. More like a shopping fail. *shrugs*

Miss Tattoo, Even the Christmas Tree Shop was disappointing in terms of silk flowers.

I love Michaels, and have gotten a lot of things there, but I have to say Dollar Tree has come through for several things. I would say check both places!

    That's not really a ripoff...

thing is, with the dollar tree, they can have some good cheap stuff thats great for a wedding, but you are subject to their limited selection. if they have what you are looking for, then its great. If you want a varied selection though, then you will probably have to look at around at other places.

Ya, it's good to shop around..but the thread title is misleading..I used a coupon and got a heart sand ceremony vase there for a pretty good price..also in the clearance bin I got a ton of candle votives in my wedding colors for 33 cents.

Didn't the article above say they got sued because they mislead customers into thinking they were getting a huge discount with coupons when in reality they were paying regular price?

I was in Michaels on a weekly basis so I could see the trends. I think you need to learn how to work their sales with the coupons. For instance, our flowers were going for $8 a stem. They were on sale, off season, for 50% off per stem. That takes them to $4. I then had a 20% off your total purchase. That took the total quite reasonable and actually cheaper than the ugly Walmart flowers.

I don't like Michaels. We've bought one thing for the wedding from there the rest came from Hobby Lobby but I do plan on buying vases from Dollar Tree as long as they last the night I could care less if they aren't "as good" as other places.
