Public or Confidential Marriage license?

Marilynne, on November 16, 2023 at 12:51 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

Hey everyone!

I am getting married in January here in the state of CA and was wondering if it mattered to the church whether i needed to obtain a public or confidential marriage license? does it matter? Might be kind of a silly questions, but i find myself thinking about it and worried if i get the wrong type, the church wont let us get married. Any insight would help!

Thank you kindly!

This would be a good question to ask the church - have you talked to them about this?

This shouldn’t affect anything having to do with the church. It is just a choice as to whether you would like your marriage license to be publicly available (and sometimes announced in the local newspaper), or if you would like to keep it confidential. The marriage license itself is exactly the same either way. But, to be sure, you could always ask your church official.

Thank you! I didn’t think it would matter much since it’s just the license, but I did call my parish and they told me to go with the public one. Which oddly is more expensive than a confidential one. I appreciate the feed back 😁

I did ask the church, the lady on the phone sounded unsure and told me to just go with a public one.

You learn something new all the time. I had no idea there was such a thing as confidential marriage licenses in the US. Apparently CA is the only state in the US that offers this option. I can see how it would be beneficial to public figures and celebrities or people who might not want their employer an angry ex, or estranged family members to know about the marriage.

From what I can see it's strictly a personal decision.
