Purchasing Own Alcohol for Wedding

Sarah, on August 11, 2021 at 5:30 PM Posted in Planning 0 7
Hi All,

We’re allowed to purchase our own alcohol for our wedding (we’re doing an open bar). Our caterer can also supply for a per member count (standard). Has anyone chosen to purchase their own alcohol? Did you really save that much money? Was it worth the hassle of shopping for it all and lugging it to the venue? I’ve heard that Costco and some places allow you to return anything that’s unused, which could be a money saver. But, our crowd are partiers! Not sure if we’d have that much left over.

Way back (1st marriage) my ex and I purchased our alcohol through Costco and was significantly less than buying it locally or from the venue. We just hired a bartender and then any left over, we kept Smiley smile

We are going to purchase from Costco - we did a rough break down - and yes, it will be significantly cheaper than going through our vendor.

I have never heard of anyone saving more money by purchasing alcohol through a third party vendor as opposed to purchasing it themselves. By buying it direct you avoid the hefty markup that a vendor would have otherwise added to it.

If you're having a big wedding with a large crowd, purchasing alcohol yourself will save you hundreds of dollars.

Plus as said, you get to keep leftovers that you can't return!

Costco & Total Wine lets you return anything not open. BTW, if you go to Costco get their French Vodka - it competes w/ Grey Goose (apparently the water is sourced from the same location) for a fraction of the price.

You may want to consider doing a signature drink sign - that would really help you focus on specific alcohol that is needed. You can make them fun too.

We're having our caterer provide alcohol because it was one less thing for us to have to think about. FH and I couldn't agree on how much alcohol we should even buy for the wedding (he was fine with running out, I was not), so this was just the easiest way to deal with it all. Our cost is based on opened bottles though, so that may be cheaper than on a per-person count.

We are also letting our caterer provide alcohol. It came out at a very decent price only slightly more expensive than purchasing it ourselves. He will also provide garnishes, mixers, cups etc so it worked out for us
