purple food coloring?

bluedaisy, on August 18, 2010 at 10:42 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 13

Anyone know where to buy purple food coloring? not the gel kind...needs to be the liquid kind to turn water purple.

(and yes...I know red and blue together will make purple, I want to know if I can find it somewhere without the hassle of mixing those two)

I don't think so.. I am doing purple and really they just don't make it because it is more practical to sell blue and red.. because it gives you multiple options. If you do find it though.... Let me know : )

Ive looked at michaels and jo anns...and they dont sell in actual liquid food coloring, just gels or a paste type thing (which was the wiltons brand so probably what youve seen, it was hard to tell what it was so we asked an associate)

Rachel-yeah, Im thinking thats the only option...but I figured if anyone would know of where I could get some-it would be someone on these threads!

The ones in the link are basically liquid, I believe if you add a bit to water it would give you the effect you are looking for. I use them to color my fondant. They arent super duper runny but they are definitely not the gel ones either, they might be just what you need if you can find em.

But good luck in your search Smiley smile. I hate when you know exactly what you need but can't find it.

If you buy food coloring it tells you on the back of the box how to make purple... it's really not that much of a hassle...

If its in the "neon" box thats from the brand Mccormick. You can make dyed water with paste dyes. Just use a toothpick and add to water until the color is what you want. I use paste dyes to dye easter eggs that way. If you have a confectionary shop (cake making) near they might have liquid dyes in purple too or powder dyes.

I know how to make purple food coloring by mixing colors...but Im considering using it for my water in my centerpieces for my 20 or so tables that the venue would be setting up...Id rather make it as easy as possible on them as possible.

shdvl-is that something I could make up ahead of time and just have it a little container?

Probally I dye the water I add to buttercream frosting before I add it. I think I have a purple you want me to test making a darker concentrate and adding it later to water? All my colors are the wilton colors you can buy almost anywhere.

Try a bakery. Im a bakery manager and Ive sold lots of things to customers from our books. Although my company makes us bump up the price some. Id use air brush color. Its a large bottle and its not the gel thats used for coloring frosting! Goodluck!
