Question For the older brides

FMC, on August 30, 2011 at 3:41 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 33

For you ladies who have been married before or who are older, are you doing the whole garter / bouquet toss?

We didn't - mainly because most of our guests are already married and there were only a few single adults there. The rest were teenagers so we didn't see the point.

    What do you consider "older"?

We didn't, but we only had 2 single females and 1 single male- who is about to get engaged to one of the single females.

I'm not, but just because we're having a small wedding and it doesn't seem to fit. I also think we have 2 or 3 single ladies total. I also hated it when people made me try to catch the bouquet, but that's just me.

Actually come to think of it, I'm not sure there are that many single guys coming to my wedding. Maybe I should rethink the idea!

We skipped it because we didn't want to waste everyone's time with 'performance stuff' and because we find both rituals a bit demeaning. Especially since there's always that busybody relative who has to badger people into participating. *shudder*

I was 50 when I married, and no, we did not do the bouquet or garter toss. (I didn't even wear a garter!) Several reasons: our wedding was very initimate, a total of 30 guests, and all except 2 women and 2 men were married - and I really couldn't see any of them scurrying for a cheap bouquet or tawdry garter. Another reason: throughout my entire adult life going to weddings, I've had people attempt to drag me out on the dance floor to catch that stupid, freakin' bouquet. I've never been the type (as in America's Funniest Home Videos) to make a complete *ss of myself by fighting with other females for a bunch of flowers. Either that, or I've had to listen to some one's great aunt Elsie try to cajole me out there and wonder why I was "still single at 40" - and let everyone at the wedding know the same thing! Too many bad memories, and I wanted to save my guests from that tedious agony!!

I will be 52 when I marry for the first time I've gone through some of the same things Michele S. spoke of, so no, with only 40 guest no flower or garter toss for me.

Haha, well I'm not sure if 31's considered "older" but I'll weigh in on this one. :-P

We decided NOT to do either garter or bouquet toss. Personally, I've always felt a little awkward/nervous for the folks who caught the stuff (b/c it's always hoots and hollers to the guy while the girl sits there turning red and laughing while he puts the garter on her).

But aside from that, we're paying a lot for flowers and I kind of want to just preserve my bouquet as is (and didn't want to do a toss bouquet separately) ... plus my big ol' thighs are so big, a garter would probably be too uncomfortable, even for the short ceremony and all. LOL

In summary, what Shannon said! ;-)

I'm 35 - 1st wedding and I just find that stuff and all of the first dances awkward so we're not doing any of it Smiley smile

I'll be 39 on our wedding and that is a big, fat NO! I hate that "tradition". I always dreaded going to a wedding when I was single because of it and we went to a wedding last weekend where they did it and it reminded me how ridiculous it looks.

We'll be doing a couples dance instead.

I'll be 42 and FH will be 40 when we get married. This will be the first marriage for both of us and we're doing both the boquet and garter toss. I think they're kind of goofy but FH is a big fan of tradition so we're doing it.
