Questions for those who had a bible reading at their non-church wedding

Kristen, on May 28, 2019 at 2:58 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 3

FH's sister has agreed to read a bible verse at our wedding and I have a few questions. I've mostly only been to Catholic weddings or weddings that had Christian influence but no readings, so I have no clue what to do about the reading. For reference, she will read 1 Corinthians 13:1-7,13

Question 1 - At what point does a reading typically fall in the ceremony?

Question 2 - When FH's sister does the reading does she need to say "A reading from [insert book of the bible here]," or is that just a Catholic thing?? Or, should my officiant just announce that she will give a reading from the bible?

Question 3 - Does she need to say "The Word of the Lord" after the reading? How would my guests would know to respond "Thanks be to God," or is this also just a Catholic thing??

Question 4 - If not married in a church setting but you had a reading, where did your reader stand and did they have any sort of podium? I plan on printing the reading and putting it on card stock with some nice ribbon on top, would it look weird if she just holds that?

I did a reading at my brothers wedding.

    1) the pastor introduced me after he talked a little bit about what marriage is but before they exchanged vows.

    2) the pastor said "the grooms sister will now read a passage from -insert book here-

    3) I did not say "the Word of the Lord" and no one responded when I was done.

    4) I made sure to sit on the far end of the first row. When I read, I just stood in place and turned lightly to face both the seats and the front. I did not have a mic but I am also pretty loud.

    Ok thank you so much!!

I will make sure to talk to my officiant about announcing her and the reading. I will try to have FH's sister sit on the end of the row so she can do that too, although we are getting a mic for her that we can maybe put under her chair, because she is very quiet.

I was going to answer too but I would have said exactly what Kristin said. I especially would not do 2 or 3, those really won't make sense to a secular or non-Catholic/Christian group. When I've done readings in weddings and it was my turn they always had me sit on an aisle end and just walk to the front for the reading, but your officiant will guide you through how this works at your venue during your rehearsal
