Quick wedding lipstick question!

Kari, on February 15, 2020 at 5:46 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 1 23

On a few posts where brides have had their makeup professionally done I've seen them comment about buying their own lipstick or borrowing from a friend. If you get your makeup done professionally, do you need to supply your own lip color or will the MUA do it for you?

I know having a tube of the lipstick is helpful for touch ups, but I wasn't sure if you need to have your own for hygiene reasons. I've never had my makeup done professionally before so I'm not sure. I want a pinky-nude, natural looking lip but haven't found a shade/formula that I like and was really hoping my MUA could do it for me.

My question is, do I need to bring my own lipstick or not?

Reach out to your MUA. Sometimes they can give you a sample size tube of the lip color they put on you for touch-ups throughout the night.

Otherwise if you are concerned about touch-ups I would bring your own lipstick!

I'm fine with either not touching up (or switching to my own lipstick for later), or even buying whatever my MUA uses, I just don't want to have to go to my trial with a product already picked out.

Some have a touch up package you can buy or that they provide. Ask your vendor.

I'm not worried about touch ups, just if I need to bring my own lipstick or not.

Oh then no. The only reason you might want to is related to touch ups.
Any professional makeup artist should use a single use applicator for health reasons.
I would be surprised to find a makeup artist that forced me to pick my own color beforehand.

Thank you! I didn't think I'd have to have lipstick when I went, but wasn't sure how it worked. I appreciate the clarification!

No, you don’t need to provide your own. Professionals use brushes so the actual product never touches anyone’s lips.

You definitely don't need to go to your trial with a product already picked out. I would leave it up to the MUA unless you have one you love love love.

My MUA said to buy one for touch ups but she would apply initially using her product. But...I had her apply the one I bought bc I wanted a really specific shade of red that was hard for me to find.

Part of daughter's HMUA included a "touch up kit" that included her lipstick. The same HMUA did my MOB make-up and I brought her a couple lipsticks and she chose the one she liked best. I'd check with your HMUA regarding their approach.

I can't speak from MUA experience, but I worked at a store with a beauty department and we always used throwaway wands, just like big beauty brand stores. So I'd assume that's what's happening.

Ask your artist. Mine didn’t require it, but I chose to have my own so I could use it throughout the day. I went to Sephora and had them help me find a color. They will let you test different colors there. I would highly recommend going that route as opposed to using your makeup artists lipstick and not having the option to reapply.

I went to my trial with nothing but a few inspo pictures and it was no problem. They clean/swap out all their applicators and such. Smiley smile

My MUA mentioned to me that if I wanted to be able to do touch-ups for the wedding day, she'd tell me what lip product to buy. I'm interested in that anyway because I absolutely loved the color she used, and would like to wear it after the wedding too.

I'm having a trial, so I am fine with buying the lipstick that my MUA uses if I feel like I need to reapply. My trial is 8 weeks before the wedding so I'd have plenty of time to find and purchase the same product if I want. Our local Sephora is awful, so I really wouldn't want to go there to find a lipstick (we do have an Ulta with salespeople who are way less pushy though, so that would be an option). I also want a lipstick very close to my actual lip color, so am not all that worried about touch ups throughout the night. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks, this is what I'm thinking. I'd rather my MUA find the perfect color for me and then just buy it so I can do touch ups and have it for the future. I've been trying to find a color I like on my own to no avail, so I'd rather just have a pro help me out!

That's exactly what I was going for, too! I told her I just wanted to enhance my natural lip color. (I also let her know that I always gravitate towards certain colors in the store, but they never end up looking quite right or don't give me the effect I want. I was super excited to have a professional pick out a shade for me!)

The color she chose initially struck me as too pink and bright (not like, Barbie pink or anything lol, just much different than what I'm used to seeing myself in), but I had my engagement pictures done that day and it photographed beautifully!

I would definitely schedule a session before with your MUA, to ensure you like the way it looks. It is also important to take a few pictures to make sure your makeup photographs well prior to your wedding. You should go over all the touch-ups with your MUA prior to your event at your pre-working session.

You don’t need to bring your own, they’ll normally supply any products. After my trial I purchased the lipstick they used for touch ups, but it’s definitely not a requirement.

If you use what the MUA has they’ll use a brush to apply it. When I did my makeup trial I looked through what she had and we tested a few options. I ended up going to Ulta to buy the one I wanted to use so I’d have my own for touch ups the day of and because I really liked it!
