My future husband and I were discussing marriage and kids -- we don't have any kids yet. He told me something that his college professor told him years ago and has stuck with him. A student asked him if his house were to catch on fire and he only had time to get one person out, his wife or his daughter, who he would chose. He said that he would save his wife, hands down - he could have another child but his wife was his life partner. Morbid, I know, but a really interesting metaphor and discussion. My fiancé said the professor's answer caused a full debate.

What are ya'll's thoughts?

Oh my gosh, when my fiancé first told me the burning house story, my first thought was "Of course, my child!". But I loved the way he explained it to me and I couldn't agree more. I remember getting so mad at my parents growing up because they did not waiver on each other. If my mom and I were fighting, my dad was on her side, no matter what. I've never doubted that he loves me and would do anything for me, but that's his wife and she's number one. And the same with my mom. I can even think of a time or two that I was rude to my mom and my dad steps in and says "You're not going to talk to my wife like that". And now, I hope to be half of the spouse that they've been to each other. Seeing that kind love and unwavering loyalty has taught me loads about being a wife.

I totally agree with you! Your kids will appreciate having a love like that to look up to in the long haul! Good job, mama!

Thank You! My oldest isn't my FH's biological child but he's the only daddy he's ever known and he's had moments when my FH did the same thing your dad did. Because of that, he knows that he can't talk or do anything disrespectfully to me without his dad stepping in and I believe that's how it should be. Every instance isn't the same of course and if I see my FH being too harsh or not understanding one of the kids, I'll step in to rectify the situation but we're a team against any & every one - children included. I think your parents did an amazing job!
