Rant: Is anyone else sick of the phrase "Marry my best friend?"

MrsO, on September 24, 2012 at 9:42 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 79

I swear I have been seeing this DAILY on facebook. It's so overused and it's gotten to the point that I cringe a little when I see it haha

"I can't wait to marry my best friend!"

"X days until I marry my best friend!"

"Today I marry my best friend!"

"1 year ago I married my best friend!"

I get the sentiment. My husband is my best friend as well, but ugh, lets get a little more creative people instead of saying the same thing over and over again

Yeah I dont really use that phrase, maybe once or twice but then again I like being wierd & perverted lol. I like saying lover alot, but not alot of conservative people can stand to hear that.

Sometimes I also think, he isnt my best friend he is a really good friend. My besties I talk to about my period, shoes, clothes, ya know all the girlie stuff, & frankly FH could care less about (tho he does indulge me when I talk anyway)

I find there are a lot of phrases associated with weddings I'm getting sick of. "The most important day of your life!!" "The most important dress you'll EVER WEAR!" What about the day you have kids? Or maybe some other life changing, career or other decision. I don't like all the pressure put on it.

    I have 3 contenders:

    - One of your versions with the best friend.

    - It's the most important day in your life.

    - It's your day so do whatever you like!

I really can't make up my mind.

    Totally acceptable Julie Smiley smile

Chuisle, while I know that I am guilty of saying stuff like that during my planning, I agree.

Lol ... I may have used this before.

I typically say something like, "The most amazing guy a girl could ask for" or something similar. Smiley smile

I've yet to say that phrase, but that's only because my FH isn't my best friend. He'll be my husband, and that's a very special title that encompasses a lot of other stuff, but not best friendship. The two don't have to be mutually exclusive, I don't think, but I'm sure I'm in the minority there.

Agreed. I always thought that was more for if like you were friends before you started dating. Like you married someone who WAS your best friend.

I never said it because when i think of my best friend i think of my MOH - my best girl - friend.

Technically yea my fiance is my best friend but i've never called him that cus he's far more then just my best friend. I was actually shocked when he called me his best friend. Aww really?

I prefer "love of my life" .. .I can't wait to marry the love of my life! lol

@Katie - Yes, exactly! "Love of my life" is the more appropriate phrase. Surprisingly, haven't heard that one too often. Weird.

Tayla, I agree. I don't believe that your husband has to be your best friend.

For me, my husband became my best friend before we started dating. That is how our relationship actually began, because our friendship was so strong that the other feelings developed in addition. But Masquerade Bride explained it well that your husband doesn't have to be your "best friend", and in many people's cases, really isn't.

Despite considering him my best friend though, I have still always avoided this phrase like the plague lol

I'm guilty of using "love of my life" a lot in reference to him, which some people probably also consider just as overused

MrsO - *Phew* Glad someone agrees with me. I was almost positive I committed a cardinal sin saying that!

My FH was just a friend, and had helped me through some relationship problems before we started dating. But once we started dating, he was my boyfriend, then my fiance, and will be my husband in 10 months (wow). He definitely is the love of my life, but you'll probably never hear me say it. He knows what he is Smiley smile

Amy - Totally agree. The term "baby bump" irritates me! Don't know why that became such a fashionable term. I blame celebrities lol.

Oh my gosh, THANK YOU! I thought I was the only person that does NOT feel as though I'm marrying my best friend...

My best friend(s) are the women I call when I need someone that understands the feeling when I say that I want to remove my uterus with a rusty spoon, because the cramps are so bad; the ones that can relate when I threaten/want to smother FH with a pillow if he doesn't stop snoring in my ear because he INSISTS on spooning in bed; the ones that I call when I'm completely frazzled because FH is in the hospital (again), and I need someone to ask me how *I* am doing/holding up, instead of just asking about him.

THOSE are my best friends. FH is the man I love, and that I have chosen to spend my life with. My best friends are the women I have asked to stand there next to me as I say my vows to that man.
