Read ceremony script or be surprised?

Lily, on October 10, 2022 at 8:21 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 6
Is it common practice that couples typically review their officiants script before the wedding? We are getting married by a family friend (this Saturday!) and we don’t really know what he’s saying. We have provided our story and met with him a few times to discuss. He’s a funny person that I trust and has performed lots of ceremonies before but now I’m worried that I don’t know what he’s saying.

Normally, if you're having a personalised ceremony, the officiant would ask if you'd like to give it a read through in advance.

One thing to consider is if you would like to be surprised by it - perhaps a family member or friend could read through it?

We opted not to read through ours; my husband wanted to be surprised and I didn't want to add another thing to do my to list.

Ultimately she made one mistake (got the name of the town we met wrong) but it wasn't a huge deal to us.

I would say it depends how focused on the minor details you are. I wouldn't be afraid to ask him for a copy of the script though

We were married by a mayor and he emailed us the script for the ceremony in advance for us to review to make sure we didn't want to make any changes. If you want to review it in advance I would just kindly ask him. Unless he just wings it then I doubt he will have a problem proving the script to you.

Family and friends who have been married in the past were surprised because many had religious ceremonies that the pastors were unwilling to stray from the original script, and not for lack of trying did they attempt to read the script beforehand. A couple others who had non religious ceremonies were able to read them through before the ceremony. Personally we couldn’t imagine not reading it over first.

Review the script. Make sure the details are right, there is nothing you don't like in there. Ceremony scripts aren't supposed to be a surprise to the couple

I would recommend reviewing the script! We did not and were unhappy. The message was not well prepared.

I want to know the script. Surprises probably are not good ones here.
