Readers- Do they choose reading or i do?

Brooke , on November 3, 2018 at 9:53 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 9
Are the readers normally in charge of choosing their own poem or scripture or does the bride and groom normally ask them to read something specific? Thanks!

I gave my mom a selection of readings I loved to help her see the general feel I was going for, but told her to pick anything at all that she felt. In the end she chose one from what I sent her.
We didn't tell my husband's sister anything other than that we would prefer it not be religious. She chose a lovely poem from one of my husband's favorite authors.

So I guess I'd say it's ok to offer suggestions or a general direction to go in, but I think they should get to make the choice on what they feel is meaningful enough to say to you on your wedding day.

I think you should definitetly offer suggestions and guidence. You could pick out a few you love and ask what they think and prefer. I think would be helpful because you’ll know the feeling and what would be appropriate in your ceremony best.

I chose two readings that I wanted in my wedding and then assigned them to my two readers. I specifically chose the readings that matched their personalities better and they even thanked me for choosing the ones I did for them.

If you don't want to straight up tell them what to do you can choose a few readings you like and let them choose from those options.

I’ve been a reader in several weddings and have been given the one I was to do. However, my youngest and her FH who are marrying next Saturday (eek!) selected the two readings they want in their ceremony and let me choose the one I want to do.

Either way. But I would either give a few ideas, say choose one, or ask them for 2-3 selections they like, and review them. Avoiding the trap of just one item, if the other hates it.

We are selecting the readings we want and then choosing the people who we think would be best to read them. We want to choose the readings that fit us the best, and especially because we are not religious we really dont want anything from the bible or anything like that and are going more with poems and different sayings from various authors etc.
