Real candles vs battery operated

Rachael, on October 15, 2017 at 10:23 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 23

Anyone using battery or LED candles versus real candles? I love real ones but understand fire hazards and wouldn't want anything to happen even if we are careful. Anyone doing battery operated ones? What do you think of them?

What is the setup for the candles? If they are in votive holders or something that will not show them directly, I think they are just as good as real. If you have a clear view of the candle, then real is usually better.

ETA: By "clear view" I mean clear holders rather than translucent.

Many of our venues don't allow any real candles at all except for unity candles.

We just got married yesterday, our venue allowed real candles but I chose to go with the electric, I like them especially in tea candles. Real tea candles only burn for 1-2 hours and then there done, electric 'burn' for up to 40 hours and where real would leave a big waxy mess in the bottom of the votives these were so easy to clean up and remove, and all the votives still look brand new. I chose electric candles that have a real flicker and they were placed in gold mercury glasses, five on every table and nobody knew the difference. The only time I don't think I would use electric is if the candles were in crystal clear votives as center pieces where guests are looking directly at them.

I bought a bunch of flameless vanilla scented candles on clearance today at AC Moore. I wouldn't want to worry about candles falling over at my wedding and the tables going up in flames!! Ahh.

The flameless wax pillars look very realistic.

If you are using LED tealights or votives, just make sure they are not in see through votive holders. That makes the fact that they are fake really obvious.

I'm using battery candles only in the ceremony room because of the fire hazard code, &real ones for the reception.

Are you putting them in anything? I guess it would sorta depend on the way you plan to use them as decor and the limitations/policy at your venue. Our venue allows real candles as long as they're enclosed so our candles will be real and sitting in a holder.

We're using LED ones. It does depend on your venue's policies, though if you want to use real ones. I wanted to use LED because open flames make me nervous. We got 2 packs on Amazon but then my mom found a pack at Costco for considerably less that looks more realistic.

Our venue requires the "tallr" holders, as well. so we plan to use that. However, if fake ones look good with everything, I will make the switch.

To pp who bought vanilla scented candles, you may want to look for unscented candles. Scented candles can really affect how your food and wine tastes and some guests find them overwhelming.

H hates fake anything, so we did real candles. We used tealights in votive holders. They said they would burn 3-4 hours, but most lasted 6+ hours. We had kids at our reception too and had no issues. The only time an issue could have happened is when a kid ran near our backdrop behind the head table, and the backdrop had candles in it. I was only a few feet away at the time, so I just blew out those candles and pushed the backdrop up against the wall so there was more space in the aisle. No more issues.

Check with your venue. Some will not allow real candles...period. I know ours will not and it really put a cramp on my idea for centerpieces. (I didn't even think of them not allowing until one of the people I work with told me her daughter had her reception at the same place and she had to hit up three stores to get enough battery operated candles at last second due to not being allowed to have them....wasn't in either of our contracts by the way).

I love the idea of real candles, but we have no choice. It is LED for us.

We want to use the real ones but I'm not 100%. Most likely we will use real pillars and led votives.

I'll be using fake. It's nice that many more have done this also.

My venue didn't allow for open flames, which is very sensible, so we did tall glass hurricanes around our tapered candles

My venue won't allow any real flames at all. If we use any candles they'll be electric and in some sort of colored votive. I have been to a couple weddings that used real candles and while they looked nice they made the venue stink when they went out/were put out. I do have a pretty sensitive nose so I may have noticed it more than others but electric ones won't ever smell!
