Real vs fake candles

So my centerpieces are lanterns. I put the correct size candle for what it says max 3 by 4 and it seems the lantern gets hot at the top to the touch, I even tried a smaller candle and it still gets pretty warm. Has anyone experienced this with their lanterns. My venue allows real flames so that's...

So my centerpieces are lanterns. I put the correct size candle for what it says max 3 by 4 and it seems the lantern gets hot at the top to the touch, I even tried a smaller candle and it still gets pretty warm. Has anyone experienced this with their lanterns. My venue allows real flames so that's not an issue and the lanterns are meant for real flames just don't want anyone to touch it and get burned. Should I keep the real flame or use fake?

    I am trying flickering led candles with high aides so you can't see the fake flame as well just the flicker. And fairy lights in the lanterns as well.
