Reception at a vfw club...need encouragement

Cassandra, on October 11, 2019 at 11:28 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10
Hello! I've started to plan my wedding for next October. We have a strict budget to include everything and unfortunately we are unable to get married at a larger "nicer" venue. Even with all inclusive packages, we still went over budget. We are fortunate eplaces to have friends who cater, DJ and are photographers so we are saving costs there. I'm doing all my own decorations. Out of all the potential places, the best deal I've gotten is through a VFW club in town. There's an outdoor roofed pavilion outside we can use for the ceremony at no additional cost. We are also allowed to come the day before to set up and decorate. I guess the only downfall is it's a VFW and obviously doesn't look like much from the outside. I figured this was going to be ok as the reception will be indoors, we have control of decor and will be doing photos at a nearby pond. I'm just feel self conscious or maybe embarrassed a little. If anyone has any experience hosting a wedding at a VFW or attending one, I greatly appreciate the feedback. This is what we've decided on, and won't be changing it for the financial reasons...I just need some words of encouragement! Thanks!! October bride to be 🍁🎃

It’s about those who are there. You will have a wonderful wedding. You can decorate how you want. It’s awesome you get the day before to set up! I love the sound of the pond and in October!! Who cares what anyone thinks. This is about you and FS and a building is a building- a pace to celebrate! Plus think that the money you are paying is going to a place that honors people who fought for our country.

I wouldn't worry. I've never judged a venue really, I'm more just happy to be at the wedding celebrating. Obviously big fancy venues are fun but in the end it seems to be more about food & drinks & partying & company than the venue.

Coming from a family of veterans, I agree I would especially appreciate a VFW venue! I also would never judge the couple on their choice of venue. I'd appreciate they were making the best choices for them, and I'd MUCH prefer to attend a wedding the couple can afford than one where they are clearly spending more than they comfortably can. (The most elaborate wedding we've ever attended was easily in the $60,000-80,000 range. Everything was SO over the top. It was beautiful and fun, but the parent's of the bride were still paying off that wedding well after their daughter's marriage ended less than a year later. I love them all [extended family], but that just seems completely ridiculous to me.) Congratulations on finding your venue! Smiley heart

I think it'll be amazing! VFWs are great for events! I'm 100% positive you will decorate it beautifully! I know for a fact I never judge a venue from how it looks!

I have attended several weddings at VFW halls. They are always lovely. Believe me when I say that nobody is going to care, or even notice, what the outside of the building looks like. I can also tell you that it's nothing to be embarrassed about!! Lots of people choose this kind of venue because it is a really affordable option. Imagine the number of couples who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford a traditional wedding/reception, if not for places like the VFW hall! It sounds like you've got a good handle on the setup, and will be able to decorate it into whatever kind of theme/vibe you have chosen.

Here's something else: if we hadn't gotten a "friend" price on our venue, we'd probably be at a VFW hall as well. Nothing wrong with it.

This is your wedding!! Own it!! The location doesn't matter. The event taking place does. Smiley smile

People may actually admire you for reigning in costs and bringing weddings back to the way they used to be. I’m old enough to remember the days when most receptions were held in halls, and sometimes family cooked the food. It makes everything that much more personal. You’ll knock it out of the park. On the day of your wedding all of these thoughts will be the farthest thing from your mind because you’ll be living in the magic of joining yourself with your love.

I think there’s so much on tv and books about the perfect wedding. When I was growing up the reception was in the basement of the church and it was cake, punch, nuts and mints. A lot has changed but most of us can’t afford big fancy weddings. Good friends, good music and love are all you need for a perfect wedding!

You can do a lot with candles and string lights that allow the drab decor to fade into the background. I've been to weddings at clubs like that and they were great.

I am all for VFW Wedding receptions! You can decorate however you want and they are affordable. My husband and I had our wedding reception at our local fire hall and everyone is still raving about the food and how much of a good time they had.
