Reception food

Ally, on November 21, 2019 at 2:16 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13
I’m thinking of changing my mind on my food choice for the reception. We are having a casual outdoor rustic style reception after our ceremony with about 75 guests. My reception is at around 1:30 and will run until around 3:30 or 4 so it’s between meal times. We were thinking of doing meat and cheese trays with buns, toppings and condiments and potato salad and pasta salad. After checking some prices I’ve realized that it would be about the same price to have Jimmy John’s cater and bring platters of 4 inch subs. We can do an assortment of subs and they will deliver so I won’t have to worry about designating someone to go pick up food or worry about keeping food at the right temperature. Just looking for some opinions on this idea. We would probably do 3 platters with turkey and ham as well as a platter of BLTs and a platter of Italian subs and veggie subs and still have pasta salad and potato salad. Is this an acceptable spread for a casual outdoor reception between meal times??

I think this is perfectly acceptable! I might add a couple of fruit and veggie trays though - just because sandwiches, pasta, and potato is a lot of carbs!!

Very nice! What about replace either the potato or pasta salad with a green salad?

I think that's a good idea. it makes it easier on you having someone prepare it instead of you buying all the parts and preparing it yourself

I think that sounds like plenty of food for between meal times! I do agree with PP's that I would swap one of the carbs with something light and fresh like fruit or veggies Smiley smile

Sounds like the same concept, but way less work! ...I was thinking for you, but honestly for guests too! And less mess. Sounds perfect Smiley smile

I personally *hate* Jimmy Johns, and I tend to think of them as my real fast in-between-classes-with-nothing-better option lol. Sorry! I don’t mean that meanly. It’s just how I think of them. I would prefer the meat and cheese platter as a guest, but it’s entirely up to you!

When do you think your guests will have the meal that is lunch? What time is your wedding?

Also, when I'm dressed up I don't want to eat anything that doesn't come with a knife and fork; it's the mess factor.

How is 12:30 and thereafter not lunch time?

I don't want drips on my best casual clothes, either. Or my hands. I want a fork and food that doesn't drip much.

The rude tone isn’t helpful nor is it necessary. I would consider anywhere from 11:30 on to be lunch time. Even if people don’t eat lunch before coming I feel that 2 four inch subs as well as pasta salad or potato salad is an acceptable size meal for lunch. The only sauce that the subs have on them is mayonnaise and that’s not going to stop. At the end of the day it is my wedding and I’m trying to get married with a small budget and doing my best. People are there to see us get married and not to eat a five course meal. It’s lunch time, casual, and outdoors. It would look a little silly to serve a huge fancy plated meal.
