Reception on the weekend after Memorial Day

Lauren, on March 8, 2019 at 10:23 AM Posted in Planning 0 13
Hi all!

My fiancé and i are planning on getting married in a private elopement ceremony on the Oregon coast in 2020. We were planning to get married in April and have a reception for our friends and family in May, but now we’re concerned with the OR weather cooperating in April since we’ll be outside. We were going to push the reception back to June 6th 2020 (no date was officially sent out to guests yet, etc) but i realized this is the weekend after Memorial Day. Do you think this is okay? Im worried some guests might be traveling over Memorial Day and won’t want to travel 2 weekends in a row.

Thanks for any input!

Ohhh...I never thought of that. My bachelorette is being planned by my MOH for the weekend after memorial day. Oops! Oh well, lol. Anyways, I still don't see too much wrong with it. If your guests want to be there, then they will. Does June 6th have sentimental meaning? If not, you can always change the date to ease your worries.

I don't think that the weekend after Memorial Day is really an issue, especially if you give your guests advanced notice. It might prevent a guest or two from attending, but I don't think that it will be a common issue.

We’re getting married Memorial Day weekend, and we’re 100% prepared for people to not be able to come. That’s just something you have to keep in mind when you’re planning something around a holiday.

My date is June 6th 2020. No one we have told has had an issue, and I honestly did not know it was the week after. The only thing I am having an issue with is kids because they are still in school. My sisters live out of state and we are having a kid free wedding so thats the only problem we are having, they all may not be able to come because they are still in school.

Our wedding is June 2, 2019; the weekend after Memorial Day this year. I haven't heard from a single person that this would be an issue!

I think that's fine and wouldn't bother us. We go camping for Memorial Day but it's not enough traveling that we couldn't do something the following weekend. Especially if you send save the dates early enough!

We are getting married June 2 this year, the weekend after Memorial Day, and I haven’t had this as an issue at all. In fact actually a lot of out of town relatives are happy about it because they’re taking the whole week before the wedding off to visit, but since Monday is Memorial Day, they’re only taking 4 days off work.

Oh another plus is that we have a 3 day weekend the weekend before the wedding, so we have a bonus day to finish planning and/or relax!

Thanks for your opinions, this has definitely made me feel more at ease! We aren't tied to the 6th for any sentimental reasons but wanted our reception earlier in the season than later.

I'm not sure if this makes any difference in your post, but in 2020, Memorial Day is on Monday, May 25. The following weekend is May 30-31. I know this because we wanted to get married at the end of May, but I did not want to do it on the holiday weekend, so I checked to be sure. Our date is May 30, 2020, the weekend after Memorial Day. So, your June 6 date is actually 2 weeks after.

    Wow Cristy,

For some reason I thought it fell on the weekend of the 30th - I am so glad you pointed that out. In that case, looks like we're good to go! =)

    Glad I could help!!

Just for future reference, for anyone interested, Memorial Day, even though it falls on a different date every year, it's on the same day every year. It's always the last Monday in May, whatever that date may be.
