Reception Seating: Sweetheart Table, Head Table, Or King's Table?

Lisa, on January 19, 2022 at 9:33 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 2 53
How are you seating yourselves and your wedding party at your reception?

A sweetheart table (just you and your new spouse, and seating your wedding party either among the rest of the guests or at their own table)? Reception Seating: Sweetheart Table, Head Table, Or King's Table? 1

Or a Head Table (where you, your new spouse, and your wedding party members all sit together, and the significant others/dates of your wedding party members are seated elsewhere)? Reception Seating: Sweetheart Table, Head Table, Or King's Table? 2

Or a King's Table (you, your new spouse, your wedding party members, and the significant others/dates of your wedding party members)? Reception Seating: Sweetheart Table, Head Table, Or King's Table? 3

Here is an article describing each of these: https://burghbrides.com/blog/sweetheart-head-kings-table-whats-difference/

What are you choosing for seating for your reception - sweetheart table, head table, or king's table, and why?

We are going to do something like this photo, except where we are sitting will be connected to the two long tables beside it, instead of pushed back away from it. We are having a small, intimate wedding and wanted everybody seated together like one big family. By having the small table we will be sitting at connecting the two long tables, it gives it a feeling as though everybody is connected and sitting together, while still giving FH and I a little sense of intimacy.

At the moment, my fiance and I are torn between a sweetheart table and a king's table! We definitely want our wedding party to sit with their significant others for dinner, so we ruled out a head table for that reason. Our choice will also depend on the layout that we decide on for the rest of the reception space.

I love this idea, especially for smaller weddings! Definitely connects everyone, while still giving you and your new spouse your own space too.

We are doing a sweetheart table. We like the idea of being kind of on our own for dinner. We also made sure to sit on the opposite side of the room from bathroom/bars so people don't have to pass up to get to those things. Hopefully that will help give us some time to soak it in and enjoy the day together.

Excellent point on making sure to sit out of the pathway to restrooms/bar/etc! I would not have thought about that. I love the sweetheart table idea because it gives you and your new spouse some time alone on the wedding day. I hear from so many people about how they were so busy throughout the day and socializing with everyone else, that the thought being seated with just my new husband for our first meal as husband and wife is appealing.

We're doing a head table. I originally wanted a King's table - but only my maid of honor and bridesmaids have partners (they all happen to be married) so it was going to be very uneven. Only my MOH knows currently that I'm doing a head table, so I'm wondering how my other two are going react, but its just for dinner. After the actual plated meal I hope no one is just sitting at their tables! The spouses of my bridal party are all going to be sitting together (two are related). For me, I struggle with the amount of attention that is given to the bride as I don't particularly like attention, so having a head table instead of a sweetheart table is alleviating that for me a bit.

I agree that a sweetheart table seems to put a spotlight on the bride and groom as they eat dinner, which can sometimes feel awkward (though the bride and groom are usually in the spotlight for the whole day anyway). A head table sounds like a great idea for your scenario! As long as you seat their significant others with people they will already know (and it sounds like you already plan to), this should work out fine!

A kings table is such a cool and fun idea! I can understand you being torn! I hadn’t really thought about doing one of those but I do not think our venue will accommodate it well and I know that I will really enjoy spending time with just my husband.

I've heard the same thing! A sweetheart table is a great way to make sure that you and your new spouse get some time to yourselves at your own wedding.

Kings tables do take up quite a bit of space, especially if you have a lot of people in the wedding party. I'm not quite sure that one will fit in our venue either, though might be possible depending on our room layout. The time with your new husband definitely gives more appeal to the sweetheart table, and the sweetheart table makes it easier to arrange the other tables!

I'm leaning towards a sweetheart table as well! Are you seating your wedding party members all at their own table? Or splitting them up among the other guest tables?

We are splitting them up between tables they all have children and wives and husbands and I wouldn't want them to be apart from each other

Sweetheart table! We aren't doing a first look so I won't see my FH until I walk down the aisle and will be busy taking photos during cocktail hour. We want dinner to be a time we can enjoy between the two of us and catch each other up on our days Smiley laugh

Sweetheart tables seem to be the most popular! That sounds like a perfect way for you and your new spouse to spend some time with just each other, especially since you're not doing a first look!

we're having a king's table by the definition you gave, but we have quite a small bridal party (only 2 on each side) so I don't think everyone would have fit if it was larger, and the partners would have been sat elsewhere. Our overall table arrangements will be like a cricket wicket - 1 table along the top and 3 long tables, forming a capital E shape, if that makes sense?
