reception style Help!

Priscilla, on May 17, 2022 at 5:41 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 5

So my wedding is in 38 days and I have to decide on reception style between East Coast/ NY style reception or traditional !?. East coast reception is were you have dancing right away after intros and then in between your first and second course. Or traditional were you sit and stay at table for all courses then dancing after . My biggest concern would be if the dance sets then sitting to eat would break up the party and vibe and also losing the crowd ex. smokers or people at the bar to come back to tables to eat . Any thoughts and experience on the matter greatly appreciated

I've lived on the East Coast near NY and have never heard of "East Coast / NY style." The only flow that I've ever seen was Intros, first dance and father/daughter and groom/mother dances, dinner, and toasts between two of the courses, and then dancing.

I would imagine it would be very difficult to get people back to their seats multiple times for each course, or getting people dancing between meals. I would definitely recommend having all the seated parts first and then the dancing after everything else.

I’m from NJ and I didn’t realize that was east coast/NY style, every wedding I’ve ever been to has been that way! I guess cause they were all in the northeast! My wedding is in Florida in February and that’s exactly how I picture it will go here too…

I have been living in Florida for over 10 years every wedding I’ve ever been to here you sit at the table with no breaks between courses . I would definitely mention this to ur venue. My wedding is in my lol Do u find that the crowd gets lost in between courses at the bar or outside smoking? Also does the breaks slow down the party? I feel like I will be constantly looking for people

Will you have a band? They like to plan out their hours by sets. With our NYC wedding, we had the huge "NY style" cocktail hour with drinks and multiple stations. Then after short entrances and first dance (no parent dances or welcome toasts), we had set 1 of dancing. Guests were still digesting and in a party mood. We proceeded to have salad course (~10 minutes ), then main course. After 3 toasts interspersed, we opened up for sets 2-4 of dancing. When guests wanted to take a break from dancing, they found dessert at their table. Later, we rolled out a dessert table. We had no tosses to break up dancing. I think that's what I remember! The night goes by quickly, but that was our schedule. Because our guests were well-fed in the beginning during the cocktail hour, we didn't want to serve the main meal right away. If you have a light cocktail hour, then I would let your guests eat their courses first before dancing.

I’ve never heard of it phrased that way but we’ll be doing intros, first dance and parental dances and then dinner
