Recipe shower -- anyone heard of?

Kristen, on February 18, 2020 at 1:33 PM Posted in Parties and Events 0 26

I remember doing this years ago for an old co worker getting married and thought it was cute. I am helping my MOH organize an informal bridal brunch ( will be stated that gifts are not expected or needed) with some of my good friends and I love cooking and getting new recipes. I also remember for my co worker's shower we brought the dish we made along with the recipe. I kind of like that idea especially since so many of my friends have dietary restrictions or preferences. What are your thoughts? Of course there will still be food for others if they choose not to bring something as I know that is still proper hosting but in my circle a lot of my friends host informal parties that are bring something to share. I saw this idea here: https://www.punchbowl.com/p/recipe-shower

If you disagree please state so but please keep the comments respectful. Thank you in advance.

We are doing part of that! I’m sending a blank recipe card out with all my shower invitations so people can bring me their favorite recipes and still mail one in if they can’t make it to the shower! We aren’t having people bring their food we are having the shower food catered little tea sandwiches.

I personally wouldn't do a guest-catered shower or ask guests to bring food to a shower. I like the recipe idea though. My mother included a custom recipe card in every bridal shower invite then put them together in a recipe box for me and gave it to me as a gift at the end of the shower. If I was invited to a shower but asked to bring a dish, I'd probably just pickup something at the store. I wouldn't know how many people to cook for, what dietary restrictions there were, etc.

I was thinking to do both. I will have some food because some of my friends are not avid cooks and may not want to bring anything which is fine. Is it silly to ask people to bring a dish to share but maybe state not mandatory. I of course will still provide food too. Smiley smile

That is very good point and I figured a few of my friends would do the same. I was thinking to make it optional to bring the dish to share what do you think? Or should I not all together?

It's more of a "know your crowd" thing I think. If it's common to do guest catered/potluck events then it's probably fine. That's not common with my friends or family, we just cater the events we host.

I think you may get a hodge podge of food that way. Maybe you provide food but have everyone bring desserts! I would make it not mandatory yes

I think it's a little risky asking guests to bring food, but you know your crowd best.

I hosted a baby shower for my sister in law, and in lieu of cards (because who reads and keeps those anyway) I asked people to bring baby books instead! Maybe in lieu of cards, you can have people bring recipes?

I've always loved the idea of recipe showers. I agree with MrsD that I wouldn't ask guests to bring a dish, but if that's normal for you guys then it's probably fine.

I had a recipe shower! The host asked everyone to bring a recipe for me along with a kitchen gadget that can be used with that recipe. The attendees didn't make food (there was some food provided), but I thought it was great since I don't cook and need all the help I can get. Smiley smile At one of my other showers, the hosts asked attendees to bring a recipe as well, but it wasn't specifically a recipe shower, though.

I think this is such a cute idea!! i did see for my cousin they had recipe cards in the invitations so you could bring your favorite recipes and leave them in a box at the wedding. but a whole shower based on it is awesome!

We are doing this for my sister's shower in May. We sent the recipe card with the invite and asked them to pick their favorite recipe.

My sister loves to cook so it is great. Plus people can use it as their card.

Oh we are not doing where they have to bring their dish just the recipe and we bought a recipe box we will fill for her.

Oh yeah would not be mandatory as I have some friends that do not cook lol. I would almost not want a ton of people bringing sweets as that could be way too much and I know I would like to provide a cake. Maybe an appetizer theme or brunch theme?? I am not sure lol. Smiley smile.

Yeah we do the book thing too. I could just provide the food and ask for a recipe too and I personally do not keep cards so I would not encourage bringing of cards lol. I think usually cards are given when a gift or a gift card is given and I am trying to not encourage gifts.
