Recommendations for a No-makeup Bride

Steph, on November 1, 2019 at 8:52 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 10

Hi y'all!

I am not a makeup wearer. I just never liked it, didn't care enough, but I will need to find an artist for my wedding (I do want SOMETHING for that). I have NO idea where to start, what the cost estimate would be, and how to ask the right questions. The last time I was in a wedding, I asked for a barely there/natural look and I looked like 2009-era Lady Gaga, so I'm nervous now as the bride. Smiley xd

1. What's your advice for what to look for and what to ask to make sure that I'm hiring someone who will not beat my face into their own canvas, but will do what I ask?

2. What would you say is the average price that people spend on this/what vendors charge?

Before I decided to do my own makeup, I was considering a makeup artist. I don't wear any face products, just eye makeup and sometimes lipstick. When I was looking for makeup artists, I was considering airbrush foundation. The MUA can layer it gradually for the desired coverage, it looks pretty natural to me. I've seen prices range from like $125-$200 for bridal makeup Smiley smile

The lady I found has been featured in vogue and she is only $175 for bridal makeup. I feel like o got a steal. Anyway, she posts a lot of her work and everyone looks great and not overdone. I too hate full makeup so we discussed this and I sent many photos to her explaining my desires. I think your goal is similar to mine, look put together and formal but not like I tried too hard and failed lol

I'm also a non-makeup wearer and needed it to be light. I ended up just doing my own. I think if you are looking for a MUA I would bring examples of what you want and explain exactly what products you want to use. Such as "I want liquid foundation but no powder." or "use brown instead of black mascara" things like that.

I explained that I don't wear make-up and wanted to look natural. We will be doing a trial too to make sure we are on the same page about the definition of natural. You need to do a trail and be very assertive about what you like and don't like, so there will be no questions on the big day.

My make-up is $150 and bridesmaids are $70.

Check out their website or instagram for examples of the work they’ve done. Most, of not all, MUA in my area pretty frequently do a very soft, natural look on brides. If you’re looking for something even lighter, explain that to the MUA and see if they have other photos they can show you of similar work.

Like PP said, look at their instagram or facebook pages to see if you like their style. I also looked a pinterest for a lot of my ideas. When I went in for my engagement makeup, I showed her what of hers I liked along with some inspiration from pinterest. She did amazing! As for pricing, I am paying $200 for engagement makeup, a trail, and day of. She is going to charge my girls $75.

Bridal makeup can be pretty expensive but it also depends on the area you are in. Mine is $120 and includes travel. I also do not wear much makeup so you can ask for a soft glam look. I just told my MUA I would like to still look very natural so they call it soft glam. The good thing is you can do a makeup trial to have a better idea of what you want and make any changes before the big day.

Price is super variable based on where you live and who you hire. Airbrush bridal makeup at the salon I go to for my hair cuts starts at $65, and that is definitely on the cheaper side of what others on here have quoted. I'm sure that price doesn't include lashes or travel, and keep in mind you always have to factor in tip as well. Most brides also do a trial before their big day, the cost of which can be structured differently depending on the MUA/salon, so ask about that when comparing quotes as well.

Frankly, I think that most professional make-up artists generally do a horrible job of "natural" makeup and if you are used to not wearing make-up you'll probably feel like whatever they do is overdone and feels heavy on your face. "Natural" makeup to someone who never wears makeup looks a lot different than "natural" makeup to someone who always leaves the house with a minimum of five products on. I've found a lot of great tutorials on YouTube (search "natural makeup", "no makeup makeup looks", and "everyday makeup") that I'm getting tips from to perfect my own look for my day. Even if you don't plan on doing your own makeup, watching some of those videos will help you learn the language for what you do and don't like (for example, whether you want "full coverage" or not, if you like eyeliner vs just shadow to frame your eyes, if you think false lashes look ridiculous, how much blush is too much, etc).

If you don't feel comfortable doing your own make-up and really want a professional to do it, definitely bring in photos of what you are looking for (Pinterest is a great place to search for and save photos) and ask to see before and after shots of their clients (ask to see girls in a similar "natural" look and if they have examples with girls who have similar coloring to you). You should also definitely do a trial and build that into your budget.

    1. I would go on Pinterest & find looks that you like so you can show artists. I would try to find the best reviewed makeup artists in your area and talk to them prior to booking, ideally ones that have photos of more natural looks. I did trials before booking because I'm super picky, so you could do that if it's in budget.

    2. I spent $140 on bridal makeup and $80 on a trial.
