Recommendations: Name-changing Kits

Katelyn, on November 25, 2020 at 11:07 AM Posted in Married Life 1 5

Because I stay so very busy, I am wanting to purchase a "name changing kit" to help organize/simplify the process. However, I have come across several different ones and am having trouble picking the best one! So far, I've found:

• NewlyNamed.com

• MissNowMrs.com

• ImAMrs.com

• HitchSwitch.com

The only major difference which I've noticed among all of them is that ImAMrs.com claims to provide forms which are specifically tailored to each individual business/institute which you are requesting a name change from, rather than generic blank-form letters. They also don't submit everything in paper form via the mail. If an organization will allow you to change your name by email, they claim to include that option, as well as draft the email, so that all you need to do is enter your personal information and click send. They also claim to find forms for organizations not in their database if you use their 'Suggest a Form' option. Lastly, they claim to be able to upload any new forms which you might request pretty quickly since they update their database every Friday.

If anyone has personally used any of these sites, or a site that isn't listed, please let me know your opinion(s)! It would help me out tremendously!

Thanks so much!

I've seen several brides to be post about this and from what I've gathered these actually seem like a waste of money because you can honestly get all of these forms on your own without spending the money and there really aren't even that many that you need anyways.

These kits are honestly a waste of money. I had 3 forms in my name change process: social security, passport, and DMV. The social security and passport forms are available online and take about 2 minutes each to complete. I remember the passport form being a fillable PDF. The bank and my state's DMV required me to come in person to do the name change. Everywhere else (credit cards, insurance, etc) did not have any formal name change process. I just emailed account services with a scanned copy of my marriage certificate and updated driver's license and they changed my name. Drafting the 2 sentence email took me about 1 minute. You still have to submit the emails, mail out the documents, and go into specific places in person. The forms are easily available online.

Here is the form for Social Security with instructions. The form itself is only 1 page: https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf

Here is the link for the passport forms. Which form you need depends on if you got your latest passport within a year of the name change or more: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/have-passport/change-correct.html

The DMV process will vary state to state.

As Veronica and Hannah said, these services are a waste of money. You can print all of the forms you need to change your name off of the internet for free. I changed my name, without a name change service, and had everything completed in less than 2 weeks. The most involved parts were going to the social security office and the DMV, both of which the name change service cannot do for you.

Waste of money. Just find the forms yourself online.
