Refund from wedding vendor?

Lucy, on March 16, 2020 at 7:31 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

Hi lovelies. I am new here and I would like your opinion on something.

Recently we Signed a contract and paid a deposit with a wedding vendor for our initial date some time end of this year. But the wedding has to be brought forward due to some issues.

We informed the wedding vendor of the change in dates and they informed us that they are available on the new date. However, a week later they told us that they are actually not available as their team failed to update their calendar.

We asked for a refund of the deposit we paid and they pointed on the clause that states “... deposit are not refundable in the event of any cancellations” and when we told them that cancellation was on their part, they gave us several options 2 of which to either stay with out initial date or to postpone the wedding altogether.

Should we bother arguing with people like them and forego this or demand for refund?

Sorry, but I don't think you have any grounds to demand a refund. I would either take them up on the other options they've offered to help work with you or just cut your losses.

Cancellation ISN'T on their part. You paid a deposit for date X, now want to change to date Y. Whether or not they had date Y available is irrelevant. You can either keep your original date or choose a date they have available, or postpone.

You can’t demand a refund when you signed a contract that explicitly states no refunds.

You agreed to their terms on the contract. You can't be upset at them if the contract states, no refunds. If you cancel, you will lose your deposit.

Due to your contract, the vendor is not obligated to refund your deposit. However, they should be more accommodating. You do not mention your reason for moving dates, but it sounds like the reason was out of your control?

Ask the vendor if they would refund your deposit if/when they re-book your date. This would be a reasonable request because the vendor only has to refund your deposit once they have secured new business to make up for it. I am sure a lot of vendors will be hit hard this year with all that is going on, your vendor may just be trying to keep their head above water right now. Still, you have given them multiple months notice so they should try and re-book your date and refund your deposit. The ease of this could depend on type of vendor....

I think it is common decency for vendors to be flexible/understanding when events outside your control force you to change plans.

    Best of luck!

I would say that you’re not entitled to a refund. Your contract was for the 1st date that you wanted. I would try and work with them in a date that’s available that you and FH are ok with before it’s too late.
