Refund of cancelled wedding?

Brittany, on May 14, 2020 at 4:45 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 9
Hi all,

My fiance and I are considering a plan B for our Nov 15th wedding in northern Maryland since we are concerned of second wave shutting things down again, and of course we won't know until VERY close to our wedding date and I am concerned of having to pay the rest of our venue in July and not knowing if we will get it back if we cancel.
Truth is, I don't want to wait another 1-2 years just to have our wedding at that specific venue. I am opting for a big backyard wedding in Sept instead since the second wave will likely come back later in the fall. My fiance is not worried about this and it's frustrating to think we could lose the money. We did not purchase insurance yet.
Has anyone cancelled with their venue completely and gone anywhere else? If so, have you lost your money paid?

We haven’t officially cancelled with our venue but they offered all our deposits back and they also offered to reschedule within a year. But I don’t have confidence in choosing a new date, nor do I want to wait a year. So I’m 99% we’re going to cancel, have an intimate ceremony in June and then maybe plan a reception for next year.
    Good luck to you!!!

Yes our venue was booked thru most of spring 2021 already when we booked 3 months ago. I wanted a short engagement, not put my life on hold for a virus!! Good luck to you also!

Im having the same issue. My venue offered to reschedule but didnt say anything about refund or cancelation terms. Our wedding is in August and we're nervous for obvious reasons...I would rather cancel and do a small ceremony/celebration with immediate family than have masks at my wedding. Just saying...

I’m not in this position, but it depends on your contract. Almost all deposits are nonrefundable and the venue isn’t going to give your money back if you decide to cancel instead of postpone.

Hi Brittany! I'd be very careful when purchasing wedding insurance to read all the terms really closely - I've heard from lots of couples that many plans will not cover Covid-19 related issues.

Your deposits and cancellation fees will be completely dependent upon your original contract, so I'd check what it says!

From my understanding, the contacts are null and void of they cant honor the terms in the agreement. Right now its hard to tell what will be allowed by the end of summer/fall... :/

I rescheduled my wedding from 6/2020 to 9/12/20 and then 6/26/21... and now just cancelled it altogether (will do a small thing whenever I feel like setting it up). They are keeping the non-refundable deposit but said they will refund the 50% that I already put down. However they said they will process that in December since they “process refunds 6 months prior to the wedding”. I’m a little uneasy about that fact 🤷🏻‍♀️

I lost my deposit because I couldn't reschedule my venue and just had to cancel it. It was a bummer but it is what it is
