Registering for Wedding decor?

Annie, on August 2, 2020 at 1:16 PM Posted in Registry 0 7
My fiancé and I got engaged late Feb. 2020 and are getting married in our backyard (Very DIY - 25 guests, self-serve beer and wine, pizza, and cupcakes) on Oct. 24, 2020. We Are very lucky to own our home and have all the housewares we need. I set up a Honeyfund because we have never been on a real (more than a long weekend) vacation together (since we were saving up to buy a house) and a nice honeymoon is important to us.

My sister-in-law suggested I set up a registry on Amazon for the wedding decorations (lots of lights and some fun Halloween touches, centerpieces, etc). Interested in hearing thoughts regarding this. Thank you!

I would find it inappropriate to expect your wedding guests to purchase your wedding decor. As a guest, I'm not going to buy someone a gift that they'll use once and then either discard or sell. Seems super rude to me.

That’s fair. I do think any lights for the yard/deck, seasonal decor (Halloween is our favorite) would be reused, but I was also concerned about how it would be perceived.

I think that home decor that you happen to use for your wedding is different. Most people aren't going to recognize the string lights that they bought you anyway. But registering for 10 (or however many) centerpieces is going to be pretty obvious and probably not taken well.

Be prepared for people to be offended since this is rude. If you can't afford something then skip it but never ask for your guests to supply it.

Register for fun stuff you want instead. That coffeemaker or mixer you've been looking at in Target or register for camping gear if that fits what you're into.

The real issue I see is if I’m buying someone a gift off their registry for their wedding...,I don’t pre-purchase it and give it before the wedding. I give it at the wedding or have it shipped but not necessarily so that it arrives before the wedding. Often I haven’t even looked at the registry until a few days before the wedding. I think home decor in general is okay but I would expect to receive gifts in time to use them on the wedding day.

I agree with everyone else that there are no benefits and only downsides to registering for wedding decor.

I wouldn't register at all if you don't need anything. Your guests are very likely to give you money, and you are welcome to spend that money on anything you like (including wedding decor or your honeymoon).
