Registries are Expensive

Kayla710, on August 2, 2021 at 8:46 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10
Hi there, I’m getting married next summer but its all I can think about, so of course I’m doing everything I can this early. A little background, my fiancé and I both come from families that have always struggled with money. Our budget is $3,000, we’re doing everything we can to pull this off as inexpensively as possible. I was browsing Zola and The Knot’s registries and everything is just… so pricey. Knowing both of our families and their situations, I imagine they would find the registry items to be pricey as well and I’m not sure they would considering gifting from there, let alone the rest of our guests. After browsing I’m thinking it would almost be more polite to forget about a registry and let people get us whatever they want if they choose to. I just feel like in our case it’s asking too much to have multiple items ranging from $50-$150, I wouldn’t want our families to get the wrong impression. Thoughts?

There are lots of other places to do a registry. Target or bed bath and beyond are great options because they have so many price points. Focus on places you usually shop and see if they have registries.

You put on your registry what you want/need. If something is “too pricey” people can contribute money towards it and it can be from a group. That happens in my family.

We did registries at Target and Bed, Bath, and Beyond and put some smaller items on, so that people had options if they wanted to stick to the registry. I know Amazon does a registry, and so does Wal Mart. You don't have to have the things that Zola and the Knot list on their registries (even B,B,&B had some ridiculous stuff on theirs, we just ignored it) if they aren't items you want of feel that your families and friends would want to purchase or have the money for.

Target, Walmart, Bed Bath and Beyond are all inexpensive. You don’t have to register for expensive stuff but when you get married, guests are very generous. Also some people will pool their money for larger gifts. But if you don’t register, you will get gifts you don’t want and can’t return. Cash is not always the default so don’t prepare for that. It’s also very common to have a wide range of prices with a variety of lower cost items $10 and under that they can bundle. Be aware that you get what you pay fo so don’t cheap out because you feel like they can’t afford something, which is not for you to decide what they spend. Plus, they have a year to give gifts.

Just to add, those sites are incentivized to get people to register for a lot and very expensive gifts - they make money based on a percentage of what is bought! Not everyone’s list includes $$ in fancy appliances, just pick what you actually want and that aligns with your family and friends. Good luck!

It looks like you've already made the decision but I just wanted to say, definitely do the registry! It gives guests an idea of what you want and if they don't see anything they like, they will probably give you money. But if you don't give them any direction, you may end up with multiples of gifts.

Don't forget Amazon! They also have wedding registries.

You can put whatever you want on a registry. Also you can make a registry on Target or Amazon with very reasonably priced items. You do not need to use wedding specific websites like The Knot or Zola to make your registry.

We skipped the registry because we don't really need more "things" and were hopeful that if people felt it necessary to gift us something they would just give us cash, but you will always have guests who insist on giving physical gifts anyway, or people who think that a gift isn't required. So we only received gifts from about half of our guests, some cash which was a nice way to recoup some of what we spent on the wedding itself and some completely unnecessary physical gifts that we will likely never use and are now just clutter in our home.

If you want a registry, make one, and include gifts in all price ranges and for all budgets. You may be surprised at who "splurges" on some expensive thing you felt guilty even adding to your list, and having inexpensive items makes it more likely that you'll get physical gifts you actually want vs things you never needed or asked for.
