Registry Alternatives

Shelby, on August 16, 2019 at 5:34 PM Posted in Registry 0 6

My FH and I are living at home with his mom right now to save up for a down payment on a house. We are hesitant to register for any gifts for our wedding since we don't want to pay for a storage unit for the items and do not know exactly what we will want or need for our future home. My fiance thinks that setting up a "fund" is tacky. Is it better to not register for anything and let guest choose gifts (whether money or actual gift)? I am scared I will end up with a ton of random gifts that we will never use and need to return. If we do not set up a registry, should we note anything on our wedding website as to why we do not have a registry?

A fund would be a great idea! Most people seem to prefer giving money over gifts anyway, and that makes it more convenient. On the invitation you could put “in lieu of gifts please consider donating to our forever home fund [insert link]”

Honeyfunds and homefunds are a scam so it’s worth skipping.

You can just not register. People know cash makes a good gift

I agree with your FH. Skip the registry. Most people don’t give physical gifts at weddings anyway, so you shouldn’t have any issues unless you’re having a shower. People know that cash is a good gift without being told, plus cash funds take a portion of your gift anyway.

As PPs said, don't register. Most people will know you want cash that way!

Yep - I think skipping the registry might be your best option. Alternatively, you could do a very small registry with a few items and giftcards (Amazon makes it super easy to let people give you any amount in Amazon money) if you want to give people more options

Do a monetary fund registry. I know the Knot has one and you can name it what you want. Call it the "New House" fund. That's what we originally named ours, but then we bought a house in the midst of planning. So now it's a honeymoon fund.
