Registry for engagement party?

Jeffrey, on January 24, 2018 at 9:54 AM Posted in Parties and Events 0 11
Getting married September 2019. Planning an engagement party now to celebrate. 100 people coming to a nice restaurant for a brunch. I think it's tacky/presumptuous to make a registry and would rather just get gifts if guests are so inclined. Especially since the wedding is so far away. What are people's thoughts??

You don’t register for an engagement party. Gifts aren’t typically given then.

Engagement parties aren't gift giving events. At the most, people might bring a bottle of wine or a picture frame.

In my area it is pretty common to give gifts for an engagement party. I wouldn't necessarily put it on your wedding website or anything, but if people ask, it will be there. It is also fairly easy to search online using Your Name + FH Name + Registry. This way, if someone does want to get you something, it will be there, but it won't be shown anywhere as if you were expecting gifts.

I think it’s super tacky. How many gifts are people supposed to buy? A wedding isn’t a money making venture.

Agreed. But multiple people coming to the party have asked where it is/suggested one

I've never even heard of registering for an engagement party. I've only been to one and there weren't a lot of gifts but the gifts that were there looked like bottles of wine or champagne. I think if you're counting on gifts than you'll probably be disappointed.

Again. Not expecting it. Quite the opposite. But after multiple people asked where the engagement party registry was, I figured I'd bounce it by the forum...so thanks for the feedback

We did not register before our engagement party but we did have a lot of people ask where we were registered. When we explained we just wanted everyone to get together and no gifts, some people were not happy about this. Most people brought gift cards although they were not expected.

I had never been to an engagement until this past summer. Since she's a bestie, I knew she wasn't registered yet, but EVERYONE asked her. If you don't register, people probably still will give gifts out of excitement (guilty; I got them a picture frame with their name and proposal date). I wouldn't stress about it. Honestly if you just got engaged, you aren't going to have a registry, so it tickles me that people ask.
