You register at multiple stores for the convenience of your guests, not what more you can “get”. If a family member doesn’t live anywhere near Target and they choose not to shop online, they can’t buy from your registry. If that is a non-issue for you, then you don’t have to do anything further.

You dont HAVE to register at more than 1 store if you dont want to. If people cant shop at target or online they may just give you cash, or a prepaid visa/Mastercard gift card that you can use. We did 3 stores, but BBB was our main one. The other 2 were smaller and had stuff we couldnt or didnt like from BBB. It worked out fine. We had a lot, got a lot at the shower, and still have stuff left on all 3. But that's okay. The registry is more a guide for your guests so they have an idea of what you want!

There are lots of things a couple might want that they do not carry at Target, or where Target does not have a pattern you do not want. So those things in addition to things from stores local to those gifts givers who want to look at and check the features in person, would be nice. Some of these may be specialty items. Some much cheaper in quantity purchases. This is particularly true of hobby type purchases, or seasonal ones. For example, if you have a yard and use your grill a lit, and do not like buying disposables and trying to serve messy barbecue and ears of corn and grilled vegetables on paper or foam plates, which melt or get saturated, you might want to buy 30 dinner plates, heavy stoneware, or hard to break glass plates, and snap on plate covers to keep things warm until carried off , and to keep flies off. And buy 6 large platters so you can clear a whole grill of food, start another, and put all out fast buffet style. A restaurant supply house that sells basic, hard to break glass or stoneware, will sell lots of 6,12,14,36 of one item in a carton. And you can get 24 glass beer mugs, and 36 large plate and 6 platters of great lasting , hard to chip quality, far cheaper than at a place like Target. And they will ship in boxes with slots for each mug, or plate, so you can compactly store them between uses. .. .. Or hostess carts, 2 shelves high on large wheels, whether you bring things from one room to another or load at a kitchen door to go to the grill and picnic area. $150 or so for one that will last year's, and carry several hundred pounds, not like Target stuff. So, something simple, but you might have a wish list from a restaurant supply house if you use this sort of thing. When people see you ordered or made a wish list from different stores for specialty items, they will not think it looks greedy, just careful shopping for what exactly fits your needs. It depends what you need and what your interests are.

We registered at three places so all of our guests would have options if they choose to gift! Crate and Barrel doesn’t have any stores down near his family, so we also have Bed, Bath and Beyond (which they do have!) and Wayfair for online shoppers. This offers a wide range of price points, too.

Wayfair also allows group gifting, so people can easily “go in on” a pricier item if they want.

We brought them all together on our wedding website on The Knot.

All of these companies have checklists to make sure you’re ticking all the registry boxes. Granted, we’ve been living together and have a lot, so we can ignore a lot.

We did register for a splurgy thing here and there, like a steam mop. Not fun, but we have messy dogs lol.

We registered at two places: Target and Amazon. We used Target as our main registry, and used Amazon for the other things we wanted that Target didn't have. The Amazon registry was also more of a convenience / second option for guests. I agree that you can't put too much on a registry, but I will say that you shouldn't register for things just to register for them. Only register for what you really want, because if you don't people might buy some of the "filler" things you registered for but didn't really want/need.

We have registered at multiple stores but are using MyRegistry.com as the main registry because it syncs our Bed Bath And Beyond registry (and many other stores like Target) but also allows us to add anything you can buy on the internet. We have stuff from amazon, Etsy, Disney store, Walmart. Tons of options.

We registered at Bed Bath and Beyond and Amazon. It's also totally true that you can just register at Target if that's all you want. However, if you're looking for something different, I recommend Amazon, because they have so much variety! Smiley smile

In my opinion, your FMIL is wrong. Only add the things you really want. If you add too much, you may not get the items you actually want. If you can't think of things you need, don't add anything else.

I like Amazon. But usuallyregistries have that option where someone else can purchase it elsewhere and Mark that it's purchased. So I think even if it was all on target if they get it for you elsewhere it is ok

If you feel like you don’t have enough options (vs. enough items), you can always opt for the cash funds. I’ve seen them claimed to be used for anything from house fund, honeymoon fund, etc. My friends listed theirs as the honeymoon fund because they had lived together so long they had a lot already and gave another option for their guests without adding more “stuff”.
