Regretting hyphenated last name

Ashley, on January 15, 2020 at 9:22 PM Posted in Married Life 0 11
I hyphenated my last name when I got married and I don’t like it. I want to drop my maiden name and I just want to take my husbands name, would that be considered a legal name change or can I still used my marriage certificate to change my name?

This would be a legal name change and, depending on the state, you’d likely have to petition the court.

So I can’t just go to social security and use my certificate to get a new card? :/

If you already changed the name on your Social Security card based on the marriage, you couldn't get a second change of name based on the same marriage. If you never got around to changing it on your Social Security card in the first place, you could use your marriage certificate now to change to his name.

Not if you already changed your name after marriage.

Can I ask why you regret hyphenating? I was planning to hyphenate to become Ashley Williams-Saporito because I have work published under "Ashley Williams," so I'd love to be able to think about why you regret it to see if it's really something I want to do.

Growing up, I always said I wanted to hyphenate my name when I got married. I wanted to keep a part of myself and I didn’t want a whole new identity if that makes sense.... but now that I’ve done it I wish I just fully committed to just taking my husband’s name. I also don’t want to be associated with my maiden name anymore for personal reasons. It’s Jackson-Wright. I just want to be Wright.

I've had a hyphenated name my whole life and it is a huge pain in the ass. I just go by 1 of the last names, but both are legal. So when you get a new job you have to put it down, at the doctor they want your legal name etc. Very recent example, I was trying to sign up for my work wellness screening day. I couldn't get my name to work. I tried every way I could think of; just the 1st last name, just the 2nd, hyphenated, with a space. Nothing worked. Finally emailed someone, they said it was all one big word. So annoying. I get wanting to keep your last name for identity reasons, that's totally legit. Just know that filling out documents for basically anything will be much more annoying from now on haha

No I totally understand the burden of having a hyphenated last name. I’ve had it for over a year now. I’m ready for just one last name 😭

I hyphenated my last name when I got married for similar reasons as why you want to. I’m established in my professional life with my maiden name. I’ve only been married and had my new name for a little over 3 months, but so far I have zero regrets and it’s been a great decision for me.
