Renting cake stands for your wedding?

Andrea, on July 20, 2015 at 8:21 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 21

We went to reserve a cake stand to rent for our wedding. The lady said it would be a $350.00 deposit and $95.00 to rent it. I do cakes as a side business and have made cake stands before. We were going to rent one because I felt we needed a special one. FH said we are not paying that kind of money to rent a cake stand you can make one. So here's what I made for less than $25.00. What do you think.

Sweet! (Pun intended) :-D That's beautiful and will look amazing with the cake on it and the lights... I ended up buying one, but we had a rustic wedding, so we just needed something plain.

Just curious: what is the base made of? wood? I.e., given that the cake can weight fifty, a hundred pounds or more depending on the number and size of tiers and all that icing!

Thanks Rebecca I make fondant cakes on a regular basis and yes they are very heavy, especially when you start adding tiers. it's made of a solid type of Styrofoam that can withstand at least 200 pounds.

Thank you and I don't blame you FutureMrsMyers, however; because I do cakes (although I'm not doing ours) my guests are going to be expecting something spectacular. So even the stand had to be little bit grand.

Yours is gorgeous! We bought one from Hobby Lobby. They had 50% off wedding stuff and we got it for like $20 & are going to dress it up a little. That is crazy they wanted $95 for a cake stand!

It was super easy. Give me a glue gun and I can do anything, lol

Our theme is birdcages & lovebirds so she's going to make the top tier to look like a birdcage. It will have 5 tiers. Each tier will have a purple ribbon with just one strip of bling. It will also have sugar flowers cascading down the side (that's if I don't change my mind by then). I want the look of simple elegance.

That's so pretty! Our bakery has cake stands they will let us borrow, but I also stupidly went looking at some online and now I am in love with this insanely expensive cake stand. Fingers crossed it goes on sale or I forget about how in love with it I am.

@Jac3286 I was looking at going that route to but when I saw the prices I said no way I am definitely making mine. I think after the wedding I might be making a go of making and selling them. Seems like a good business, lol

    That's ridiculous.

our bakery had cake stands for rent and they were like, $20 rental fee or something. i ended up renting a suitcase prop from our florist for like $15.

Thank you @ MrsA2B. Trying to spend more than $12,000.00 for this wedding so the DIY projects continue

@Jenna that's along the price range I was thinking. Even up to $25.00 but $95.00 is way out of the ballpark and what got me was the deposit. Who has that kind of money to just let sitting around for something like that

@Future Mrs.Shermister I had been going to Home Goods for about two weeks everyday to see if one would come in but they never had one in the size I needed so making mine seems like it was meant to be.

Yours does look fabulous! My baker lets you use any stand you want with a deposit of $85 which she holds until after the wedding. I just wrote her a check to hold onto.

@Monica SC thank you so much!! That price is way better than what they were telling. I would have gladly paid that but $350.00 deposit is crazy.
