Replace the honking car procession with ringing bike procession

Hannah, on September 28, 2020 at 6:30 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 6
We dislike cars, we don't have cars, we wished our state would spend all the money it spends on streets for cars into the train and bike net. So how could the traditional honking car procession really fit to us? In our everyday life, we do anything with bikes like food shopping and drive to work, in our freetime we do bike trips and sleep in the forest. So why not using the tandem that we own anyway to lead on a bike procession with it, followed by our family with their bikes and ring the bike bells? We kinda think it would be a suuuper funny adaption of the tradition. What do you think about that?

Definitely different! I like it though. It's a great way to incorporate your personal love into your wedding day. I will ask this, will guest be expected to ride bikes in their wedding guest attire? I think that could be the only caveat. Maybe instead of bikes give your guests bike bells? so for those that won't ride bicycles, they still have the bike bells?

Like PP, I think it sounds super cute. I had the same thought though - a lot of people aren't going to want (or in some cases be able) to ride a bike in their wedding clothes. Also, what about grandma?

Bike bells as favors would be a really fun favor and stick with your idea. If you don't like cars, then maybe just don't do the honking procession - FWIW I've never seen this tradition (outside of Germany).

Yeah, I didn't think that through...

I don't wear a dress because I hate wearing dresses, but still, our mothers, his grandmother and my sister might do so... and yes, we will have to transport a grandmother who might not be able anymore to drive bike... uh, I'm a bit sad now, I was so excited about this idea, I loved that idea so much.

I didn't know it's just a german tradition, I am german and here it's an absolutely common thing really everyone does at his wedding. For all those americans who don't know the tradition: after the official wedding at the registry office (so, just closest family), we drive from the registry office through the city with a car procession, leaded on by the couple who is siting in the first car, it's usually decorated with flowers, bands and other decoration stuff, often something special, like an old-timer or a very fancy car, that is just borrowed for that. Everyone is honking throughout the whole drive to congratulate the couple. It's common to strengthen the drive from the registry office to the place where they will continue their wedding day to let everyone know about their best day.

If it's common where you live (it's unclear if you live in Germany) and/or everyone you know has access to bikes (or you want to rent them for everyone), and you can make some accommodations for grandma and others who might not be into riding a bike, it sounds super cute. But, it's definitely a "know your crowd/location/logistics" kind of thing. If it works for you and yours, awesome!

Yeah, I guess I have to overthink a lot for that. And yes, I live in Germany.

For me it wouldn't even necessarily be riding in a skirt so much as "dress clothes" if that makes sense - I would be concerned about chain oil, etc.

Maybe you could do a really short bike ride in lieu of the cars, since you don't like them? I know when I was in Germany that the procession we saw was wending its way all over the place, so maybe something a little more direct? For Grandma could you do a scooter? Golf cart? (something that would allow her to be part of the festivities, but not ride a bike?)

You should definitely do what work for you (and your guests) - and if cars aren't you, then there's an alternative, just has to be figured out.
