Rethinking Peacock Theme

Deanda, on August 8, 2012 at 1:20 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 9

I was at FH's family cookout last week and one of his cousins told me her wedding theme was swans because the symbolism of how swans stay loyal to their mates and will stay alone even after their mate dies. When she asked me if there was any symbolism behind peacocks I told her I just chose the theme because my colors were purple and turquoise and when I started googling I found that there were plenty of peacock opportunities for those colors. I just googled peacocks and found that males peacocks gather several harems of females. Now I'm considering ditching the peacock theme and only sticking with my colors because I'm not sure if I want my wedding theme to be centered around an unfaithful male animal...Granted most/many animals have multiple partners; but stil.... Do you guys think I'm being overboard?

Yes, a tad bit lol. It's not something that really needs to be taken literally - and I truly doubt your family and friends are going to Google the "symbolism" behind peacocks and then call you out for it at your wedding haha Smiley winking

If you decide to skip the peacock theme, you can still find decor options with those colors without using peacocks (those are 2 of my wedding colors as well) it won't be as easy to come across, but they're out there. Good luck with whatever you decide!

So I looked up Peacock symbolism, and while their natural mating habits seem less than honorable, in many cultures peacocks are held in high regard. They represent nobility, holiness, watchfulness, spirituality, awakening... In Christianity the peacock represents the "all-seeing" church -holiness, sanctity, and rebirth.

Personally, I think they are beautiful birds and if you love the theme with the feathers and all, I say go for it!! You don't need to find some symbolic meaning behind your choice of color or theme.

Uh...yes. If you love the peacock theme, go with it. Its not like some one is going to come to the wedding and say 'Why'd she pick that unfaithful creature?' SERIOUSLY, lighten up. It will be fine ;')

Yuppers! I'm a peacock bride and found your post just blasphamous! LMAO In all seriousness, humans and a handful of animals are the only monogamous species - the rest of the animal kingdom mate often & with different females to pass along the best genes so I wouldn't put any stock into it.

If you wanted to have some fun with her, tell her your doing a Black Widow Spider theme - after mating the female eats the male LOL

Yeah go with the symbolism of it from the different cultures if it bothers you, don't look at its mating habits but what cultures around the world regard it as. Ben and I both have Celtic heritage so we went by the celtic power animals, his is a Stag while mine is a Fox. They can't even mate with each other irl lol but those animals really symbolise our personality and it makes for great symbolism Smiley smile

I'm a peacock bride and I found this (most of which I look at as positive) :

    1.Generalities: Negative

◦Peacocks are often regarded as vain and foolish birds, and their presence symbolizes indulgent decadence. Their feathers are thus often a sign of vanity, as well as bacchanalian excess.

    Generalities: Positive

◦Peacock feathers represent pride, and by extension, nobility and glory. Peacocks are also known to eat poisonous plants with no ill effects, making their feathers a symbol of incorruptibility and immortality.

    ◦Ancient Greek Meanings

◦In ancient Greece, the peacock was the patron bird of the goddess Hera. According to myth, she placed "eyes" on its feathers, symbolizing all-seeing knowledge and the wisdom of the heavens.

    Hindu Meanings
◦Hindu mythology associates peacocks with the god Lakshmi. The feathers thus represent his qualities: kindness, patience and good fortune.

    Buddhist Meanings
◦Buddhists associate peacock feathers with openness, since the birds display everything when they spread their tails. Buddhists also ascribe great meaning to the bird's diet of poisonous plants--the ability to thrive in the face of suffering.

You have let FH's cousin get in your head. Personally I like peacocks better than Swans.

Those were some of my colors too but I didn't want the peacocks however they are goregous animals. I just liked the colors but don't worry about the symbolism. Nobody but ur fhs cousin is gonna dig that deep. If they are then tell em oh well then they can pay for ur vow renewal. Smiley smile lol
