Review my invitations (round 2) plus comma question

GummyBearSTL, on May 9, 2017 at 2:08 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 15

Hi all, I had to change my name, but anyway,

I'm not doing inner envelopes and the outer envelopes only have names of parents (with children invited), and names of a single guest (with plus one invitation). Because I'm not doing an inner envelope to save money, do these belly band styles with name cards look ok? The ribbon would be blue. Given my options, what would you do differently? Also, do I need a comma before the word "and"? I know I don't need one if there is a line break.

(The picture is just a draft. all the cutting will be done better. lol)

If you are having this all professionally done the vendor should be making sure the grammar is correct.

I'm not following your comma question since neither example uses an oxford comma. Personally I am not a fan of using oxford commas--so I would skip.

I do agree with Svetlana that Dad needs a comma. It should read Mom, Dad, Mark and Devin, regardless of a line break.

Any excuse to post my favorite English major meme. Yes, you need a comma after Dad and after Mark.

The line break came from this website

    https://www.invitationsbydawn.com/content/wording-tips-formal-wedding-invitations/

... but since this is the name card not the invitation, and if it looks better with commas, then I'll add them.

Always, always, always Oxford comma. As an English major and almost attorney, I always share what @cheval posted and now this:

    http://www.cnn.com/2017/03/15/health/oxford-comma-maine-court-case-trnd/

It should read "Mom, Dad, Mark, and Devin."

The Oxford comma is only needed when distinguishing between phrases. In this case, a simple serial, it's not needed. There is no ambiguity in the phrase. It's more so just a professional opinion. That is English teachers, journalists and linguists would all give you a different "correct" answer. Go with what you think is best, but my vote is the following: Mom, Dad, Mark and Devin.

    Also, I like the bands.

ETA: Open any newspaper and count how many Oxford commas there are. None because it's generally not required for comprehension. But to Katherine's point is usually required in law. Different writing styles have different conventions.

I second PP that there is no such rule as omitting commas because of line breaks. I also never knew that I was taught a specialty rule by always having a comma before "and" in a list until college debates on the Oxford comma. For me, there is no debate. It was required in all my English classes through high school.

It should read, "Mom, Dad, Mark, and Devin" (There should be a period to end the sentence after Devin here because I wrote a sentence, but I worried that would confuse you.)

@Cheval I love it! I was just trying to explain to my coworkers why we would need to use the oxford comma, I wish I had this to show them lol

@Kate. Mom and Dad are our parents. We are hosting our own wedding, and all our families know this. Would it be confusing for our invitations who are addressed to our parents by their first names, and then on the "inner envelope" have "Mom, Dad" and brothers' names? I addressed the inside as Mom and Dad because that's what I call them.

@Kate... correct... this is something I was still really worried about. I don't really know what to do to indicate all the invited guests' names since I didn't want to write XXX and Guest on the outer envelope.

Love the idea - I would recommend a paper belly band to hold it all together. Satin and organza ribbons will loosen after a while even if you have taped or glued them in place. Paper works best for this type of wrap.

I did the same thing with my invitations and people have told me how pretty my invitations are. I used wired ribbon to hold it all together so it folded over and looked nice. People sent me pictures, they held up!
