Ring help!!

Anne Marie, on June 30, 2010 at 9:01 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 22

Ok, I think I have a problem. My fiance gave me his mother's diamond solitaire. I wanted it set in white gold instead of yellow gold, with the diamond in platinum. We went to Belden Jewelers (which turned out to be a mistake). The prongs were set twisted TWICE before they finally got it right (about a month later). However, once it was set right I figured it was all set and I finally had my perfect ring.

Well, now I just recently noticed that there are no markings inside my "gold" ring. There's no manufacturer's stamp, and there is no marking indicating the number of karats. Everything I can find online says real gold ALWAYS has these markings. But before I go and cause a big stink and demand my money back, I want to be sure, so I'm thinking I'll have to pay to have it tested.

Any experts here? Does your ring have markings inside? Did anyone else get a ring from Belden and does it have a marking inside?

HELP!

My ring is Platinum, and there is a a stamp from the company and a PLAT stamp. Yes, all precious metals should have a stamp. Even in Mexico they tell you not to buy silver unless it has 3 stamps!

I never noticed, but my white gold ring has a stamp on the inside. I would definitely get it tested. Sorry, that's really frustrating!

Not to be a negative nancy, but if you suspect the gold is not real, perhaps you should find what paperwork may be available on the diamond as well, then have it checked too. I would hate to think you have taken something to be adjusted and been robbed, but stranger things have happend .

Sorry this hasnt been a pleasant experience for you Smiley sad

I also agree with Heidi to get the diamond tested as well. I had a friend that sent her ring in to get sized and had it appraised after and found out that the diamond had been changed. I hope everything works out for you!

My white gold ring has an "S" inside of a circle stamped. I don't know what that even means, but it's there. This is the first time I've even thought to look inside my ring for a stamp, oddly enough!

I would go and have the band and diamond tested. Believe it or not, some places will "switch" the diamonds out which is why I only deal with one jeweler. My engagement ring is my FH's deceased grams engagement ring, and its pretty old and the diamond is a miner's cut. I had it looked at and they told me what to look for when I pick up my ring if I ever need to leave it somewhere. The only thing I could think of as to why it is not stamped would be maybe your band is too thin??? My band is very thin and is not stamped.

You can actually get the gold tested at a pawn shop or one of those places that buys gold. They don't charge, but they test it before telling you how much they'll pay. It only takes a minute and you're obviously in no way obligated to sell it to them. Just pretend like you're wanting to sell and they'll test and you can just say no when they tell you the price..

My ring is platinum, and has a stamp. I'd get it tested asap - and I agree with Heidi, get the diamond checked too!! Good luck Smiley smile

I agree you should have both of them tested. Since this is an older diamond, do you know if it was ever GIA apraised? It should have a specific number on the diamond itself.

Mine is platinum, and has the same stamp as Michelle's.

Yea, if it was GIA appraised it should have a serial number on the girdle. I make them read it off to me even if I just take it in for a cleaning.

My white gold rings both have stamps - they should always have stamps in them, it's part of the mold. Go throw a fit.

Mine's really hard to see b/c the band is pretty small...but there is a 14K and an S-type shape to it.

Mine says PT95. I found this article that says all gold must be stamped.

I used to work in the jewelry business. The only reason it should NOT be stamped is if it's been sized multiple times. If it has, there is a good chance that the place the original stamp was placed has since been cut out or added to. I'd definitely have it tested though.

Hmmm, now you guys got me curious. I am 99% sure my ring is (white) gold, but it doesn't have a stamp that I can see. But it was custom made for me by a reputable jeweler. Wonder if that makes a difference. I still need to get the paper work from him, perhaps I'll ask when I pick it up.

Oh now I'm bitter. Sleep deprived...and bitter. My ring had a stamp on it before it was sent to be sized...now there isn't a darn thing. Guess who is going to be getting a phone call from a slightly crazed individual--Kay's!

Kay's and Belden are owned by the same parent company (I found out from the BBB).

My diamond actually has a couple visible inclusions, so I'm certain I got the same diamond back. They did resize it once after the first time I sent it back to fix the prongs. The band is fairly thin, but I can't imagine its too small to fit a stamp.

I think this might be a time to call in my dad's help. He's better at raising hell than I am.

    Thanks for your input everyone!
