Ring Judgement

Gabrielle, on July 26, 2018 at 8:22 PM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 122
My fiance and I recently got engaged and I've been getting some pretty opinionated feedback about my ring. We are not a super traditional couple and he ended up not going with a traditional diamond ring, and instead the main stone is an opal. I am absolutely in love with the ring, but many of my friends and family members are giving pretty negative feedback about it. For example, "that's not a real engagement ring" or "oh so he couldn't afford a diamond, huh?".
I honestly don't really care if they like it or not, but it does tend to be a little offputting when they are being blatantly rude about it. How would you suggest dealing with a situation like this without coming across as a serious jerk?
I've attached a photo of the ring for reference.

I have a Moissanite ring which looks similar to a diamond but I'm open about it being Moissanite. People act like it's not a great but how materialistic is that? It's about your life together not a piece of jewelry. Just say "this is actually my dream ring but thanks for that". I can't even pretend to be nice to rude people so that's my best suggestion. I usually cite the reasons I DIDNT want a diamond and that shuts them up real fast.

Either way, a ton of people have non-traditional rings so there's really nothing to defend. YOU have to wear it not them

"Lucky for you I love it and since I'm the one wearing, my opinion is the only one that matters 😀" then you can also finish it with a "you should get a cat, it has 9 lives, plenty for you to take care of before you need to take care of mine" 😊

Girl, I feel you. My ring is pretty small (which is exactly what I wanted) and I've been getting all kinds of sympathetic grimaces and "Awwe, that's okay sweetie. You guys are young, he'll be able to get you a bigger ring to replace it someday" One girl I work with even said "Oh, no that's not an engagement ring. An engagement ring is at least a carat." Next time someone says it's not a real engagement ring just do what I do: look up all wide eyed and dramatic and gasp "It's not!? Oh no! I guess the wedding's off!" I think ring is BEAUTIFUL. You love it and you love your fiancé. Boom. That's all that matters!

Bahaha I told FH that if he spent over $200 on a ring, it would end up at the pawn shop the next day
So my ring was free since its family heirloom 😂 all he had to do was resize it

Sometimes I like to respond with a surprised/shocked look and “why on earth would you say that?”

My ring is an aquamarine, which is my birthstone and I absolutely love it.

First of all, that ring is beautiful. Second, they're being jerks. So it's pretty big of you to not want to be one back. If you're dead set on not returning rude for rude, I'd just smile to beat the band and say, "Well I love it!"

Or go sincere and tell them that the two of you are in love and he knows you well enough to know what you wanted. Go on to say it stings when people make judgements about your honey based on a piece of jewelry they think you'd want, versus the content of the character of the person who bought you the one you actually did want.

But me? I'd tell those people a lot of rude things about themselves and their materialistic attitudes before showing them my other favorite finger with some gusto.

I would be a jerk back. Or at least say 'why are you so nasty' 'why would you say something like that' stop them in their tracks.

and to be frank I would be keeping track of these folks so when invitations come out I would know whom not to invite!

I LOVE your ring! I was actually just on a website looking at opal rings trying to justify buying one haha. I know it’s frustrating, but you love it and that’s all that matters. I’m going to add some unsolicited advice here and point out a potential negative- be very careful with it, opals are a super soft stone, I had an opal ring and I accidentally hit my hand on a cabinet and it cracked/gouged the entire stone and eventually it fell out and I never found the pieces. I was sad, and can only imagine how devastated I would be if it were my e-ring.

Your ring is beautiful! I don't have an engagement ring at all and people give me serious greif about it. The reality is we are paying for the entire wedding, trying to save to buy a house, and have 3 children. I still get a wedding band which and that's the only ring I care about. People can have their opinions, but all that matters is that you love it. Plenty of people choose a ring other than diamond even if they have the money. It sounds like he put a lot of thought into it and that's the most important part.

Well let me start by saying I think your ring is awesome, I love seeing different wedding rings that fits the bride/ wife's personally. My ring is Sapphire Blue and I'm in love with because it my favorite color. As long as you are happy with it that's all that matters. And that's what you can tell the next opinionated person that comes your way, just say it with a smile, then you won't seem to jerkish.
