My fiance and I recently got engaged and I've been getting some pretty opinionated feedback about my ring. We are not a super traditional couple and he ended up not going with a traditional diamond ring, and instead the main stone is an opal. I am absolutely in love with the ring, but many of my friends and family members are giving pretty negative feedback about it. For example, "that's not a real engagement ring" or "oh so he couldn't afford a diamond, huh?".
I honestly don't really care if they like it or not, but it does tend to be a little offputting when they are being blatantly rude about it. How would you suggest dealing with a situation like this without coming across as a serious jerk?

Do some research on the history of the opal. It has A LOT of historical significance for weddings/love. The diamond trend has been popular for several generations, but opals historically, culturally, and in mythology were a BIG DEAL! Also, tell them how much you love it, and that is unique to you and FH. As for it not being a "real engagement ring" tell them to wait and see if there inst a "real wedding"! LOL, they are being absurd and rude. I would respond in kind.

The ring is beautiful. The next time someone says a negative remark, just tell them he picked a ring ad special to you to resemble how special you are to him. Remember, your ring is YOUR ring so don't give the "haters" too much attention.

Call out rudeness, do not let them get away with that crap. If they say it isn't a real engagement ring, tell them flat out that it is the ring that signifies your engagement so therefore is an engagement ring, and to imply otherwise is rude. If they say he couldn't afford a diamond, tell them assuming anything about your finances is rude, and so is assuming you wanted something other than what you have.
Be honest with them, but keep your tone neutral. Calling out rudeness is not being a jerk. Just stick to the truth and teach them.

That ring is gorgeous! An engagement ring doesn’t have to be a diamond? My cousin has a sapphire and she loves it! Don’t let people get you down, your ring is beautiful and unique

Your ring is gorgeous 😍😍 and the problem with ppl today is they worry so much about the ring and size and if its a diamond or not. All i was worried about was if it came from the heart and if it was something my FH knew i would wear. I am not a flasy person and i dont wear ring so my FH knew if it was big i wouldnt wear it! And if the ppl who are being rude to you is single or haven't been asked by their SOS you should just ask where their ring is 😏

That’s terrible! I can’t believe people actually said that. I have a non-traditional ring myself with a morganite and *gasp* NO DIAMONDS!

I would just ignore their ignorance. Also, congrats!

My grandmaothers ring is a gold band with a single opal I've always love it. As far as other people know that that's what you wanted. And love that it's simple and elegant.

Mine is a heart shaped blue topaz that was made to resemble a blue diamond. We customized it together and it is one of a kind so when I tell them its custom they think twice before insulting me. My ring captures exactly who I am-- love, beauty, real and unique. No one can tell me nothing and you should feel the same about yours. Everyone will have an opinion and no matter what, the ring is a symbol of love and commitment to your partner and not suppose to define financial status.
