Ring Repair Cost Rant

Mrsbdg, on February 23, 2018 at 10:57 AM Posted in Married Life 0 25
I just need to rant about how crazy repair costs can be. I have a beautiful wedding band I love with my entire heart. The only problem is it is an eternity band. As a jewelery professional I knew I was in for it when I was gifted the band. I just got back from my closest bench jeweler buddy and he quoted me $2k to repair two loose stones in the channel setting. I was quoted $2,500 but a local AGS jeweler but I can't afford either quote rn.

Super bummed I can't wear my wedding band until I can afford to repair it. Smiley cry Feel free to post your repair rants here!

I do not have a repair rant, but I wanted to say I am so sorry to hear that! That is crazy expensive for a ring repair!

I know when I get my wedding band I have to get it with insurance. I am such a clutz. I had my engagment ring for a month and I egged it and broke it where they welded it back after resizing it. We were closing up our pop-up and I got it caught on something as I was getting my self up to push the fabirc in as FH closed the top.

Ouch, I'm sorry! That's something that worries me about my ring, as it's a tension setting and any repairs would involve shipping it back to Italy to be worked on.

I was all ready to come in hot to commiserate about how much it costs to get my white gold rings re-dipped (which I need to do more that once a year because my skin really reacts with the metal) and how they charge me separately for my e-ring and wedding band because they aren't soldered together so it's doubly expensive, but dang! I'll sit right down. That's rough, I had no idea eternity bands were so expensive to maintain. I can see why you're bummed, I'm sorry.

Lol! Oh man! I fly through rhodium too! I only have one white gold ring because I need to get it redipped constantly. My wedding band is actually Argentinium silver. It was made in Argentina so I may just wait until we got to Argentina in July/August to get the guy who made it to fix it.

It because the diamonds that are looks are in the channel setting which is in the middle row of the three rows. It's super sentimental so it sucks I can't wear it.

Oh my gosh. I didn't even know this was a thing, and now I'm so anxious about my ring! I just started reacting to my engagement ring (got engaged in August), and the band has diamonds almost all the way around the band - and so does the matching wedding band. I was wondering the last few days if I needed to mention it to my FH and think about having it dipped, but now I'm reconsidering. It didn't even occur to me how pricey that could get! I might just hope and pray it's something else that's the problem, instead! Man. I'm sorry for your bad experience!

That is crazy- I had a prong break and the jeweler who made and sold the ring fixed it for free.

I would be purchasing Jewelery Insurance ASAP! That’s way too expensive for a repair. Maybe try to find insurance to cover you for the future loss.

You have such a specific style but are also kind of a romantic. What are you doing in the mean time? (We've talked about those silly silicone bands for when we're off playing in the dirt or water. We're unsure though. It's probably morw so our hands won't feel naked than to communicate our marital status.)

My whole wedding bad and engagement ring didn’t cost that much. I would get second and third opinions.

Try and go to other jewelers? 2k doesn't make sense to fix the ring imo!

Dipped? I'm sorry I am new to this jewelery thing and have never heard of this but I think I need it because my e-ring and band are both 14k gold but the e-ring turns my finger green! WTH! Can you please explain what you mean by dipped?

Dipped means the process of making white gold remain white. Gold is yellow and to make it appear so vibrantly white it is dipped in an alloy of white metals. Over time, due to regular wear and tear that alloy coating wears off and your ring appears buttery yellow.

I would talk to your jeweler about turning your finger green. Typically that green reaction is due to a high nickel content which the rhodium coating shouldn't have. They may have another dipping procedure that will be more platinum/rhodium with less or no nickel.

Won't your ring insurance cover that cost?

It's accurate, I was just hoping it wasn't so. The channel is ruined and I need a diamond potentially replaced (it's chipped from being on the bottom).

We decided to box it and wait to take it back to the jeweler in Argentina. He is going to fix it for free.

So sorry to hear about this. I would be really sad to not be able to wear my wedding ring after I got married. I'm glad to hear that the jeweler will fix it for free, but it still sucks that you have to wait several months. Is insurance an option for the future?

We went cheap on our wedding rings. We just simply couldn't afford to spend a lot on them. Both of ours together were less than $400. They're both white gold, so I imagine we will have to get them dipped periodically. My e-ring is platinum, so I don't have to worry about that for it.
