Ring Resized

Not sure if this is the right group to post in, but how many tiles have you had to get your ring resized? I’m in my 2nd go at it. I had to get it sized up by 1/2 to make it a 7 1/2. I’ve lost 20 pounds and now it’s too big. I’m down to a 6 3/4

Not sure if you mean times? If so, I've only had my ring resized once. It was a bit too big when I first got it, and we had it sized down to an i and a half, which is roughly about a 4.5 in US sizes. It was fine when I first got it back from being resized, but is a little loose now since I've lost some weight, but when I wear my wedding ring it will be pushed up to the fatter part of my finger, so I've just left it for the time being since it's only a few months til our wedding.

If you're concerned about how big it is, but don't want to resize it again, you can always buy one of these coils to make your ring temporarily smaller!

So, when they first made my ring they made it a size 6 even though they had measured me as a size 4.25… so yeah had to get it resize down to a 4.25. After some weight loss, I had it resized once more to a 3.75. Well, I lost more weight lol and I’m considering one more size-down. This is an absurd amount of times to have a ring resized lol but I have a good relationship with our jeweler and they handle all repairs in-house so it’s always same day and in the best possible care. Hope that helps.

My weight has fluctuated. I got my ring at my heaviest weight. I got a spacer to help, just incase I gained weight again. I am glad I did as I gained half of the weight I lost back.

I bought a coil for myself from Amazon and it was a game changer! So glad I didn’t resize it because I’ve gained weight since and I would have had to have gotten it resized again!

When you add your wedding band, the rings will fit tighter. So I'd invest in the coils or beads, which don't involve cutting and reattaching your band. I got my ring sized up a half size. I should have listened to my jeweler and gone up a full size. Heat, salty diet, weight gain makes my fingers swell

    Congrats on your weight loss!

I agree with others in just getting the coils. You want to limit the number or times you resize the ring because if you do it too many times, it can weaken the structural integrity of the ring. It is also recommended that rings only be size up to 1 full size up and down. Sizing it more than that also weakens the structural integrity.

I've had mine resized twice. Once when I bought it, and again after I lost 40lbs.

I’ve had it resized once in the 2 months I’ve had it. It was originally a 5.5 and we got it resized to a 5. I think it might need to go down another quarter size though, and I’ll probably have that done when we go in to get our wedding bands.

I would also consider the fact that your fingers swell up and shrink depending on the time of the year etc so instead of resizing too many times, I purchased the plastic elastic coils and use them whenever I need it. You can purchase them on Amazon.

What metal is your ring? Rose gold cannot be resized multiple times without risk of damage to the ring - the alloys it is made of are prone to cracking, so if you have a rose gold ring try not to have it resized more than 1-2x. High karat yellow gold can be resized many times, and white gold can be resized but needs to be re-plated every time it is changed. If you have an eternity or half-eternity band, they can be more difficult to resize because of the continuous stones, but a simple, plain band without any embellishments or a solitaire ring can be resized fairly easily.

Your fingers will naturally shrink and swell with weight loss or gain, fluctuations in temperature, possible hormonal changes, and depending on what you've eaten. Salty foods and hot temperatures will cause your fingers to swell. Your fingers will typically be their skinniest early in the morning on a cold day.

Some people's fingers fluctuate more than others. If your fingers seem to drastically change regularly, I would have your ring sized to fit when your fingers are on the plumper side, and use a ring sizer coil (can be purchased inexpensively on Amazon) to adjust your fit for days when your fingers run slimmer.

My rings are rose gold, and my husband bought me a size 7 engagement ring which was way too big. When I measured my finger using plastic ring sizers I got online I was usually a 6.5 but one day I had swollen hands and measured myself a 7, so he erred on the side of having it be too big and it was falling off my finger most of the time. I got a silicone ring coil so I could wear it and then set about finding out my proper ring size, because I didn't want to have it resized more than once since it was rose gold.

I ended up going to three different jewelers to be measured, and one measured me as either a 6 or 6.5 (they didn't have quarter sizes) and the other two said I was a 5.75. I need to be able to take my rings off (I work in athletics and use my hands all the time, so cannot have a ring stuck on), so I was worried a 5.75 would be too tight and get stuck if my hands were swollen at all. So I went on Etsy and ordered two $30 rings in a size 5.75 and a size 6 and would regularly try them on at different times of the day, when I had my period, when I ate salty foods, when it was hot and muggy, or after putting my hand in ice, etc. The 5.75 was definitely tight and uncomfortable, but the 6 stayed on my finger without worry of falling off but I could remove it whenever I needed to, so I had my ring resized to a 6 and also ordered my contoured wedding band in a 6. I've had my e-ring for 2 years now, and my wedding band for a year and both are definitely the right size for me. On days when my hands are swollen it can take a bit of effort to get them off but its always doable, and I've never once worried about them just falling off my fingers. I think the $60 investment in two "fake" rings was worth it to get the sizing right.

If you are considering resizing your ring again, I would get a costume ring in the size you are considering and wear it a bit before making a decision. Try to find a ring roughly the same thickness as your e-ring/wedding band, as a wider/thicker band may need to be sized a bit differently than a skinny one, as wider rings squeeze more flesh and have less wiggle room getting over your knuckle. It doesn't need to be the same style or same metal, but the band should be metal and a similar thickness to the ring you are wanting to resize.

It’s white gold. I started with a 7. I went up to a 7.5 because the 7 was barely going over my knuckle. Now it’s too big to the point where if I make a hand gesture it literally flies off my finger. I was dancing around my living room the other day and threw my hand in the air and off it it went.

I also got it measured again and I’m at a 6.

Yea a 7.5 will definitely fly off your hand if you are a 6!

I would probably put on the silicone/plastic ring coils for now - they will absolutely help prevent you from having a ring accident and losing your ring. They can also be cut to size for a good fit. I wore them on my ring when it was a 7 size (my finger being a size 5.75/6) and it helped me feel more secure wearing my ring.

Once your weight has stabilized (you've stayed roughly the same size/weight for a while) then I would get measured and have the ring resized. If this is your e-ring and you are not yet married, I'd probably just keep it as is for now and then have it resized when you get measured for and order your wedding band. Ideally you don't want to be resizing your ring a whole bunch because it does introduce weak points into the band, but white gold is more forgiving than some metals.
