Ritz Carlton at Laguna Niguel.. is it me or is it them?

Stella, on January 16, 2021 at 2:08 AM Posted in Planning 0 8
Hi, I’m pretty new to planning a wedding, and I have a couple of questions regarding signing the contract with the venue. So we toured and held a date back in 12/2020, and we’re now in the process of signing a contract. Ritz has been very slow in drafting my contract and answering any emails, usually away from the phone, and has already made so many mistakes on the contract. This is definitely not the kind of service I expected from a hotel venue, and I’m getting kind of fed up. It’s been a week since I received the contract and we started communicating about the changes, but because they usually take like a day or two to respond, this whole process has been dragging. Is this normally how contracts work or is it me just being anxious? Also, if anyone is having a wedding with them, can you tell me how your experience has been? Thanks!

Given that most places are still remote-work, and the restrictions currently in place, I can see how changes can take some time.

That said, the mistakes are a red flag, here.

If you're not happy, I'd move on.

The response time can have several factors contributing to it. Working from home, dealing with current couples getting married, etc. The mistakes are something entirely different- that would be a huge red flag for me!

I’m the type of person who provides and expects a prompt response. This would be a dealbreaker for me, personally but depends on your style.

Generally, I'd say walk away from poor communication, material errors, and bad customer service. However, especially in So Cal right now -- and particularly in the hospitality industry -- I'd probably give a bit more grace, if you really love the venue. As others have said, the hotel is likely operating with a minimal staff. I'd also assume they are currently unable to host any events, so the limited event staff is likely spending a lot of time on current and upcoming events that need to be cancelled/rescheduled. Typically, I'd expect a very high-level of service from the RC-brand, but these aren't typical times. If you have a clear second-choice venue in mind, you might try calling them to see if they are able to provide the service you expect -- you might find their response to be similar due to the many unknowns.

FWIW We have a relative in event management at a very high-end property in Scottsdale, AZ, and as you might guess the pandemic has been a nightmare. The entire staff was laid off for more than 6 months, and the property only recently brought back about 20% and let everyone else go.... For our relative, she's truly been left wondering if she was the "lucky one" to be kept on in an impossible situation.... Good luck!

I am getting married at The London hotel in Beverly Hills and she messed up the date on my contract three times. It was very frustrating but I also realized that she was probably in the midst of changing a lot of peoples weddings due to covid. I also don’t get many answers via email because the team is furloughed. We are still pushing through because we know how detail oriented and professional they are when it comes to the actual wedding. I wouldn’t worry to much about your venue. While it might be frustrating the Ritz Carlton gives impeccable service. At the end of the day this is your hard earned money. If you feel like they are dropping the ball I would reach out to other venues in Laguna. The Montage is amazing.

Thanks for the reply. Seeing this made me realize how understaffed they could be during this time. I think I’m going to push through and hope for the best. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. This made me realize how many of the Socal venues could be going through a lot and that I’m not the one suffering through this. I shall stay patient.. And good luck on your wedding at The London Hotel!
