Room divider/decorative screen/privacy screen....whatever you want to call it!!

Lala, on August 11, 2011 at 9:44 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 6

I spent all day yesterday googling shoji screens (or any of the above mentioned names) and so my mind is kind of stuck on them. I'm hoping someone can help me come up with an alternative to this. We are having our wedding at a beach house. The kitchen (which we be in moderate use that day) is very open, flowing right into the living room and the back porch area. I'd like to get something to block the majority of the view of the fridge, stove, etc. lol I thought that a shoji screen would be perfect......who knew I wouldn't be able to find one for less than $75 each?! Anyone have any ideas? I've included a picture of what I was originally thinking of and a picture of the kitchen. Thanks, ladies!!

Gorgeous house! I would worry a screen would take up too much room. Instead, maybe you could turn the counter chairs around, and along the counter put a row of candles, tall flower arrangements, or something of that sort. THat way not everyone is looking at the kitchen, but it still feels airy.

Find inexpensive, full-length, over-the-door mirrors at most any discount chain superstore, making sure to choose mirrors without frames or backing. This project used mirrors that measured 15-inches by 50 3/4-inches. The measurements for the panels in this project are based on these measurements. If your mirrors have different dimensions, adjust the size of your panels to match them. Have the employees at a hardware store or lumber yard cut the panels to size for you, as most places will do this for at no charge.

@Shannon-exactly why I asked this! I didn't even think about that! lol Thanks!

@Hayley-I'll look into this. I may be able to do that on the bigger area and then use Shannon's idea for that little bar area. That way the people working in the kitchen can still see the ocean! Smiley smile lol

@CrystalS-not using a caterer but thanks for the advice!

You can always do pipe and drape. Really easy to setup. You can even rent it. Plus you can pick whatever color drape your want. Add some uplighting and now the pipe and drape add to your decor.

If you go the pipe/drape route, make sure the pipe is shorter than 8 feet tall. Sometimes they don't fit together perfectly, and they'll be closer to 8.5' and you'll hit the ceiling. Take measurements of what you want to drape off and show it to the rental house, and they'll help you figure out what hardware you'd need.
