Rose petals, rice, confetti, bubbles?!!!?

Jacqueline, on January 26, 2014 at 1:32 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 31

I'm getting married in May and the ceremony is going to be outside. I can't decide whether I should get rose petals, rice, confetti, or bubbles for our guests to use after the ceremony. Any thoughts? What are you using?!

It depends on your venue - you might need to ask them what they allow. Some places won't allow you to use certain things (only fake rose petals and not real, bubbles only outdoors, rice not allowed). I know where I'm from, rice is outlawed because it does something to birds.

I think that using bubbles would be awesome. I'm also thinking of using them myself. I think it will look great with what I'm planning on doing Smiley smile

They still allow rice in NY. I am leaning more towards bubbles but wanted to see what everyone else was doing!

I was thinking of doing bubbles or sprinkles (if my venue lets me). But I second everyone else in saying please don't use rice!

We are doing birdseed, our venue does not allow petals which was what I originally wanted. Rice is also not allowed

I know I'm alone on this, but I absolutely hate bubbles. To me blowing bubbles is something children do in the summer and I think it looks silly at weddings. That said I know that a lot of brides like the idea of bubbles, but I would make sure to check with your venue before you decide on anything. As someone said earlier many venues have strong rules regarding these traditions.

We are using programs with flags on them that we found on Etsy! The guests will remove the program from the flags and wave them after the ceremony! I know for sure they'll be a real HIT at my wedding!

Charmaine I love that idea. I was considering it as well but it will depend on how much of my budget is left over closer to the date.

We're doing sparklers, since it's a night wedding! Smiley smile I wanted fireworks for our send-off, but they're illegal in the county we're having our wedding in. Boooo.

We are doing mini beach balls (5") for everyone to toss at our beach wedding. If someone didn't point out that sprinkles might stick to me and melt in the Florida heat I would have totallydonethat!

You can get heart-shaped wedding rice that is not harmful for birds. As a guest, I hate bubbles and the waste of all those little plastic bottles. Plus they never seem to work very well.

We're in a historic venue in a protected wildlife area and can't use sparklers or birdseed (because it can sprout weeds). I was thinking about doing the heart-shaped wedding rice or keeping it simple and going with nothing.

My first intention was to do Sparklers too @Holly ! That's how I came about with the flags as a second alternative to the sparklers. My wedding is at 6:30 so it won't be dark enough for sparklers. I'm quite happy with the flag idea though

FH doesn't care, and I'm thinking about doing confetti (if anything), partly because I've seen some REALLY pretty pre-wedding pics where the bride has blown the confetti towards the camera. I figure if I'm going to have it there for a pic like that, why not have it thrown when we leave too?

That said, it would likely be paper heart-shaped confetti, of course. Smiley smile

Edit: About the rice: It harming birds is an urban myth. http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/birdrice.asp

@Mollishism - either way about the rice we can't use it here and my venue doesn't allow it. In fact most venues don't allow it because its hard to "clean" up. So if she wants to go that route she should check with the venue first. They all have such strange stipulations.

@ForeverYours: I know a lot of venues do that. Smiley smile Just wanted to post the link because a lot of people honestly aren't aware the the rice doesn't actually harm birds.

Personally, I don't want to use rice because I don't want to be picking it out of my hair (and off of my body afterward when it goes down my dress) all night.

If I can convince my FH, I want to use glitter as it photographs well. I originally wanted sparklers but the ceremony will be at 5:30 so it will be too early. If he doesn't agree with it, we will most likely use bubbles.
