Round vs. Rectangle Tables

Katy, on November 8, 2017 at 4:11 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 20

This is another one of those things I never thought would cross my mind when I started planning a wedding. My venue has 8' folding rectangular tables. My FMIL suggested we rent nice farmhouse tables instead and just do a lace runner and my centerpieces. While this is a lovely idea those table rentals are $$$. I was chatting with a coworker about it and he pointed out that normally at weddings the tables are round so it's easier to hold conversation between a 10 person group. Now I'm not sure if I should rent round tables or if it really doesn't make a huge difference since most people are only seated for about an hour during dinner. Thoughts and opinions are much appreciated!

I wouldn't dish out that much money just for guests to be seated for an hour. I can mingle and talk to everyone after dinner is over!

Even at a 72" round table which seats 10, guests are 6 feet away from those across the table. so there isn't a significant difference.

Katy, I really wanted a farm table when I started planning. But as you know, they are usually pricey. I'm now doing round tables and leaving it at that. You have to decide what's most important to you. If it's the tables, then get the ones you really want. In my option, it's not that important because the guests will eat, chat, then get up and dance. Good luck!

We're using a banquet style table setting for dinner. I just like the way it looks so much better.

You could do a mix- we are doing one long rectangular estate table for the wedding party, FH, and myself, but every other table will be round.

Our venue only does rectangular tables. If we wanted round we'd have to rent and it's just not that important to us to factor into the budget. It may make it more difficult for people to talk to whoever is at the other end of the table, but I figure with cocktail hour and the rest of the reception, people will be able to mingle with whoever and it will be fine. I don't think it's bad if you just stick with the tables your venue provides.

I think round is easier to talk to people at, but personally, I would use whatever your venue has and not rent extra tables.

@Deirdre that was my thought process as well. Just seeing if there was any strict opinion against rectangle tables for the conversation convenience.

I agree with @Muriel. The reality of having conversations with everyone at a round table is just as difficult spatially as it would be for rectangular tables. If your rectangular tables are not too wide, it might even be easier to hold conversations with the guests on your left and right, as well as those across the table from you, versus trying to converse with someone on the other side of a round table. I personally like the look of rectangular tables better.

I just had to pick between two floor plans: round tables and rectangle. I went with the rectangle because we got more space from it. I don't think your guests will notice, it's more your preference and what works best for your venue. Google both setups and look at pictures and your heart will tell you what's right, but like a pp said, don't dish out $$ just on the look of a table.

Centerpieces for a banquet table are typically more expensive than a round because you need something to run the length or else it looks bare. We had banquet tables and our garlands were pricey .

Never even crossed my mind about tables. The only rectangle table will be mine and my hubby table and the bridal party table.

@DoggoMom luckily we need extra table space anyway because part of our meal is family style so the salad, dinner rolls and fruit will take up some real estate as well as the centerpiece and candles.

I don't know I would spend the extra money on tables - my biggest question is does your venue have appropriate linens for their rectangular tables? Or if you are going to be renting special/colored table linens will they have sizes to fit a rectangular table?

Our menu has both round and rectangle tables available. We are using the rectangles because they are just gorgeous! We got really lucky with our venue.

Go with what comes with the venue, not worth extra money. Your guests won't notice the table shape.
