Route 66 Honeymoon

Leanne, on May 11, 2015 at 8:17 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 9

My fiance and I have decided to take our honeymoon in Las Vegas. But as a fun addition we want to take old Route 66 there. We are will be leaving from Cincinnati area. But we aren't sure how to proceed with the route there. Any suggestions?

Should we just travel from Cincinnati to St. Louis then go from there?

Or should we just wing it?

HELP PLEASE!!!

That sounds cool, I have no suggestions really on how to do it, but I do recommend going to Flagstaff, AZ which has the old Route 66 there! It's about 4 hours from Las Vegas (but that's by interstates and such). But if you do end up in Flagstaff you're only a little over an hour from the Grand Canyon which would be an amazing stop if you haven't been. Sounds like a lot of fun, good luck!

We are doing a Route 66 road trip for our honeymoon as well!! We are driving the opposite way, from CA to Chicago. According to all the maps and books we have, the route starts in Chicago. So you could drive from where you are to the starting point in Chicago and then just follow it down to St. Louis. Not sure how much time you have for driving, but you will most likely get to see most of the old Route 66 that way.

We're doing a similar trip...Atlanta-LA (non honeymoon), but thinking if its worth stopping in grand canyon or just taking 20 (from dallas) to hwy 10

I would definitely plan it ahead rather than wing it - that way you can see what cool stuff there is to do along the way and not miss out on anything! I'm in the Springfield, MO area - lots of fun Route 66 stuff near here! I have never been to this hotel, but I came across it when doing hotel searches for my parents:

    http://hotelsinspringfieldmo-route66.h.bestwestern.com/

It had a lot of really good reviews on TripAdvisor and some of the rooms are supposed to be decorated with a Route 66 theme. Plus apparently Elvis stayed there once, so you might have a bonus sighting!

Incidentally, I've just started using roadtripamerica.com and so far, it seems pretty awesome! Maps out your route for you and helps you find cool attractions along the way!

    Hi Sheryl

I know it's an old post but we are planning to do the same from CA to Chicago. Can you please share more about your experience?

What kind of information are you wanting to know? I can share good places to stay, where we stopped etc. Do you have anything planned out yet?

    Thanks for the reply.

I was waiting to see how many days they gave me for vacation at work. The idea was to rent an RV from LA but as we wanted to visit around LA and go to LAS, we thought we would rent the RV from there but I don't know where to go, what to plan from West to Eat and especially how long it would take.

I welcome any advice and suggestions.

Sophia, I thought they had a private message option on this site, but I guess they must have done away with that. Oh well. It took us about 10 days to drive it, but we were booking it. They say to allow for 12 days, if you want to take your time. We did the route straight from CA, so I can't really tell you where to go from LAS, but I'm sure it can't be too hard to get back on the route. I would suggest buying some books. We got ours from www.national66.org (all proceeds go to preserving/restoring stuff on the route). Not sure how technical you want to get with your trip, but the book gives step by step driving instructions, E-W and W-E, on the original route (taking highways only when necessary, some of the original route the roads are shut down or don't exist anymore). There is another book that comes with the set that has lodging and restaurant recommendations all throughout the route. (depending on how standard or kitschy you want to get with that). I would recommend trying to stay in Williams, Arizona (near the grand canyon), going to Oatman AZ (old wild west town), and staying at the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari NM (totally restored motor inn, they did a phenomenal job). Let me know if you have any other questions.
