Rubber duck themed wedding?

Future Mrs. McKenzie, on January 22, 2016 at 5:38 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 30

I know a lot of people are going to find this odd and that's okay, I'm just looking for some ideas if this could potentially work or if I'm just a big child at heart. Okay so both myself and my FH are very family oriented. Both of our grandfather's have passed several years ago but we still want to keep them.in mind on our special day. So since my grandfather passing, he has left several signs of rubber ducks showing me that he's still a part of my life. So on our wedding day I wanted to run with that. Not too in your face but just enough small details like a wedding topper of rubber ducks and maybe a few small decorations around the reception. My FH is on board because he knows what it means to me, but I don't want this to come of as silly or immature. Any advice would help. Thanks guys.

I think you could get away with cake toppers without too much side eye. More than that I'm not too sure about...

It's nice that you want to commemorate your grandfather, but to be honest, a rubber-duck themed wedding is odd (which you know). I wouldn't go any further than a cake topper (which I do think is cute, btw).

Cake toppers are cute, but as others have said, anything more than that is going to look pretty strange.

I would stick with the cake topper and leave it at that.

Oooff. Well, the sentiment behind including the rubber ducks is very nice. I think it will be a challenge to plan an elegant, grown-up wedding around such a theme, but maybe not impossible. My issue is that a theme is usually quite broad, allowing you to incorporate many different element (i.e. fall: leaves, acorns, apples, browns, and oranges, i.e. doctor who: anything in the doctor who universe) while a rubber duck theme seems to maybe just include rubber ducks?

Thanks guys. We'll keep it simple and just do the cake toppers. Thanks for the feedback and not bashing my ideas!

The cake toppers are cute. If you wanted to keep the theme in there, maybe have your BM dresses yellow? Just an ideaSmiley smile you could also have a bubble machine if it's a venue that allows that...it could hint towards duckies in the tub!

There's a ton of little touches that you would know about but not all your guests would know about: like the socks Ninjaaa suggested or you could have a ducky hankie, Rubber duck ribbon around you bouquet (this might be pushing it).

Our colors are sapphire, seafoam, and tangerine. These might be edited especially if I go rubber duck but adding yellow might ruin the colors. I really like the idea of my FH is duckies socks!! We're also going to have a "table set in heaven" where we display photos of our loves ones past, tastefully nothing to morbid.

I love ducks too, so I get it! I tend to agree that anything other than the cake toppers might be too much. Here are some of my ideas, if you want to add a few more subtle touches.

    1. Try incorporating those colors (pale yellow, maybe some pink) into your color scheme.

    2. If you are having one of those wishing trees, maybe you could hang a tiny duck from one of the branches. It would have to be pretty small, so that someone would only find it if they were looking really hard.

    3. If you are having a guest book, maybe you could have a small drawing of a duck on the corner of a page? Again, it would be like a little Easter egg that not everyone would notice, but those who did might ask you about it and appreciate hearing why it's there.

    4. You could wear a locket or something with his picture in it, or a picture of a rubber duck?

    5. Going along with someone's idea about bubbles, maybe you could give out tiny bottles of bubble bath as a wedding favor. You could print out labels with your wedding date and a small but tasteful image of rubber ducks.

I think that it's great that you want to honor your grandfather, and so sweet that he leaves you signs in rubber ducks. Obviously it's tough to put them in your wedding without being too weird. Maybe this dilemma that you are having is hugely entertaining for him!

I just want to say I have a rubber duck obsession! I even have one tattooed on my foot. I love this idea!

How about using silicone molds to make wax/candle ducks floating in vase as part of your centerpiece. With a nice frame explaining the meaning of the rubber ducks. Maybe one duck per table to keep it cutesy without being childish. You can make them in your wedding colors so they blend into decor and don't stand out too much. Or you can make them in white/ivory.

I would do a cake topper, and if you really wanted to put one at the head table for you to keep it in your mind, I would. Smiley smile
